My 2000 OceanPro 115 is acting up a little. It is occasionally “pufffing” at low speed/rpms. Not really sure how to describe the noise but it sounds like a skip or puff or something. Sometimes it will stall and sometimes not. Maybe does this every 30-60 seconds… It always starts right back up without any trouble. Any thoughts???
Have you checked for water in the fuel? I have the same motor ('97). I had it missing then dying out at idle but would run ok with a little throttle. Pulled the seperator and it was full of water. It is an easy fix and maybe a good place to start.
Start simple and work from there. #1 check fuel as previously mentioned. If you have a small 6 gallon tank you can fill that with fresh fuel and run it straight to the motor. If this fixes things you know that you need to look at your main fuel system. Check for water first, then move on to check filters, bad fuel, primer bulb, loose fittings sucking air, hole in the fuel line, etc.
If fuel doesn’t fix it I would look at the plugs. Pull them to inspect. You might have some fouling on one or more. If they look dirty replace and re-test the motor. If this fixes the problem you may or may not be out of the woods. If the plugs were tired, possibly wrong, possibly wrong gap, you’re ok. If one plug is bad you may have another problem causing the trouble such as a bad plug wire, or something else causing spark issues.
If you haven’t cleaned out the motor in some time a good decarb such as a “Dunk’s Decarb” routine can do wonders for smoothing out a motor. If you haven’t tried it just google it, there’s tons of info out there on how to do it and all the materials you need are easily purchased around town for short money.
Good news is that on an Ocean Pro fuel and spark will take care of most issues similar to the one you’re having. Could be something else but it should be a simple fix.
Check everything as suggested but make sure you check the compression before you spend a lot of money.I had an older 150 Evinrude, it would “poof or puff” at low speeds and occasionally shut off but ran fine at speed. It was low compression in one of the cylinders.
Also, are you using ethanol free gas? If so atleast use a good treatment with the gas. One tank of ethanol fuel, that sat for about a month, due to a family illness, cost us over $500.00 in repairs. It separates, disolves fuel lines, etc., and draws moisture. My car and boat mechanics have both advised me “Don’t put ethanol fuel in anything”.
we call that symptom “lean sneeze”
always start with compression test and spark check
thanks guys! i will be checking some of these things out tomorrow. i appreciate the advice!
It’ll be alright, I’m on vacation!!!
