Johnson 250 hp Ocean Pro......fuel pump..?

Even if there were some water or bad E-10 in the tank wouldn’t that show up @ WOT and\or at all speeds…? Sometimes this motor runs like a new one - other times I’d just as soon dump it at Y73.

I’ll get some gas from the bottom of the tank and see what it looks likes. Maybe that’s it…who knows… I have an Atwood see through inline fuel filter installed and it’s clear as a bell - I just replaced the water separator filter but I’ll check the bottom of the tank just to be sure. I don’t want to pull the tank unless I absolutely have to - the deck has to be cut to get the tank out.

Could this problem be a power pack - how can you tell it you have a PP going out…? It seems like the PP would effect the motor’s ability to run at all speeds and not just after WOT or sitting for a couple hrs…

I did pull some plug wires off one at a time while the motor was running a couple weeks ago. Some of the wires made no difference when pulled others you could tell they effected the performance of the motor. Even the ones that seems to have no effect, you could hear the pop pop noise of fire at the plug \ wire connection. They’re getting fire but maybe not enough.

Note: I just pulled the plugs to take a look - they were new plugs before I ran the boat yesterday. The bottom two plugs ( bottom plug on each power head ) are fouled - look burnt with carbon - look bad. The other four plugs look almost new.

I’ve been talking to several marine mechanics about this problem and they all pointed to the fuel pump \ fuel system. Seems they knows as much as I do…these particular marine mechanics know how to replace parts.

Chris V…have you ever heard of a problem like this…?

Any suggestions from anyone is appreciated and will be looked into.

Cummins, I’m only making suggestions to remedy the problem, (troubleshooting). Now, with the bottom cylinders being fouled, something more serious may be happening here. Carb. problems? You might just need to bite the bullet, and put her in the shop. Sorry I couldn’t help, Scott

I know and I appreciate it. I took some fuel from the bottom of the tank yesterday and it was clean…no water or contaminates that I could see. Good to know the tank isn’t full of crap…

As far as not being able to get the motor to prime after sitting a few hrs.: I replaced the primer bulb\all fuel lines from the tank back a few weeks ago and oriented the bulb the way I took the old one off. The primer bulb was installed in the fuel line with the arrow pointing toward the flow of fuel but the bulb ( arrow )it’s self was pointing down. It should have been pointing up or at the least horizontal. Couldn’t get a prime with it pointing down - turn the bulb side ways or up and you get a prime in 3 or 4 squesses. We re-oriented the primer bulb with arrow up. That might have been the problem all along with not being able to get or keep a prime, especially at low rpm idling\trolling or after sitting a while. It might have been siphoning back out of the fuel line at low rpms due to gravity. I even think the instructions ( instructions are over rated )say to mount the bulb with arrow up if at all possible.

Will take the boat to Hartwell this weekend.

Has anyone else had this problem with a primer bulb…arrow down and not able to get and\or hold a prime…?
