Our four stroke Johnson 140 is acting up. I dont know anything about motors but I think it needs the linkages adjusted. We already did that one time before for this problem. Forward works fine but reverse grinds going in a little and knocks a good bit when it’s in reverse. Assuming that is the linkages, will they have to tear into the throttle controls to adjust all that? The reason I ask is the controls need to be replaced soon and I figure that might save some labor to handle all of it at one time. For someone that knows, how much would I be looking at to get the knocking straightened out and possibly get the controls replaced? Parts and labor?
Thanks
if its been adjusted already, you need to figure out why it keeps needing adjustments
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

Learned that the hard and expensive way. I kept adjusting the cables thinking thats all it was and during shrimping the lwr unit let me know it wasnt the cables!! A twisted shift shaft is what mine was and would have been alot cheaper. Not saying thats whats wrong with yours but I would check more than just the cables.
P.S. Thanks Chris V for getting us back on the water…
Thanks guys. We’re going to have it checked out.
Chris V knows more than me, but I have to ask. Are you just easing it into reverse? Alot of engines need a quick snap to ensure reverse is fully engaged.
