SAFMC closes the jolt head porgy and a few others on Sept. 3, citing the ACL has been exceeded. While most of us have had the most limited off shore season in history because of the weather, I don’t see how this can even be possible. The red porgy, AKA pinky, or silver snapper, is still open.
Why are we allowing these crooks to take our resources away from us?
It almost seems like the model they use assumes X number of boats are fishing every week and catching X amount of fish. There must not be any consideration for weather conditions, boats actually fishing, or actual fish landed.

Pretty much everything is based on Florida. We are just all under the same jurisdiction. Take red snapper for example… Florida alone put us over the calculated “dead discard” TAC. And when I say “us”, I mean SC, NC, GA… These “limits” or “allocations” are not state by state. They are SAFMC wide. So, in other words, if not a single jolt head is caught in SC, GA, NC, but Florida fills the quota all on it’s own, then the season is shut off in all 4 states. This happens more often than not.

You’re probably right. Why put forth any effort when they can spin this type of BS and get away with it?
Making bone head assumptions like this gives the appearance that they are doing their job and are essestial to the well being of our oceans.
Kinda “legend in their own minds” sort of thing.
I’m still a believer that all fisheries should be managed at the State level with no interference from the Federal Government.
NOAA should stick to predicting the weather.
SAFMC should be a thing of the past.

How can anyone know how many porgies are caught? It’s not like anyone talks about catching porgies… ever… I really hate fishing seasons.
Just one more gripe. I am retired and have a lot of free time on my hands. I am also on the SAFMC mailing list, so when they change regulations, I get a notification. SAFMC regulation changes are not immediately updated on the SCDNR site so it can be really confusing. If I wasn’t on their mailing list, I would not have a clue what was open, what was closed, and what the current limits are. How do ya’ll keep up with all of this constant churning?

Safmc.net. they also have a phone app. DNR website states that you need to check federal regulations
I got that skineej, I have the DNR and the SAFMC phone app. It’s just a lot of hassle to go through two websites and look up every fish you might catch every time you go fishing. I wonder how many go and don’t really understand what the rules are?

A few things…
- I typically print it out before I venture offshore, so I have it for reference on the boat.
- If I forget something, I’ll use the VHF
- This process is just part of the fun. It’s not burdensome unless you make it that way. The SAFMC wants you to hate the species by species limits. You might think that’s a silly thing for me to say, but their goal is “ecosystem based management”. In the Bahamas, your limit is “20 fish (bottomfish) of 60lbs PER BOAT whichever is the LESSER” and “18 pelagics”… There is a season on lobster and nassau grouper. That’s it! There are also MPA’s etc. So, in other words, you could have 10 people on a boat in the Bahamas, and if you keep 3 20lb black groupers, you are done bottom fishing for the day. That’s what a few long time SAFMC members want… Why do I bring this up? Because, what we have here is a case of “good cop, bad cop”… In other words, if you HATE species by species limits (“bad cop”), then you are much more easily convinced to try something else (“ecosystem based management”). Anyway, something to think about… That being said, it’s not really too difficult to look at a piece of paper to determine how many red porgies can be kept.
We should probably use some of our tax dollars to create a position for someone to compile all of the fishing regulations and send them to us daily.
FYI the SAFMC phone app does not automatically update itself. Better to have a printed copy and check their website before you leave.
Got a message update today on mine.
Yeah, when you open the App you get the message. Then you click a button to update. You have to remember to open the App, which is different from all the other apps.
