Jon boat re-model need advise (pics)

I had that same boat with the aluminum floor installed from War Eagle - I think they called it “skin” or “skinned out” back then. Boat was way too heavy even for the 40 Yamaha. Currently have a 1542 with Rhino lining and will never own another aluminum boat without it.

Was it done before or after purchase? If after do you remember the cost?

Scoutin. Lowes sells 4X8 sheets of styrofoam in various thickness. I bought a couple of sheets that were 1/2 inch thick and cut them so they fit real tight between my ribs. I chose 1/2 inch thick because two layers brought the floor up perfectly level with the top of the ribs. I then covered the entire floor over with an inter-locking 1-foot square plastic garage floor matting. I purchased the matting (gray with diamond plate finish) from Greatmats.com. The foam with mat on top makes the boat alot quieter, easy to wash out, and you never stub your tow on ribs. I would get rid of the front jump seats and get a gun box. War Eagle makes one, so does Bass Pro Shops (alot cheaper at BP), it frees up alot more space, and still gives you plenty of water tight storage. I throw a cooler in when I need the seating.

Sounds like redoing in wood is probably not going to be an option. I did find this mat and if I get the foam do you think this would work?

Over time how does the foam hold up to dropping stuff on etc?

I am still thinking aluminum is the best long term option but I may go with this mat idea until I get all those ducks in a row.

It was ordered from the factory with the boat. I talked to a factory rep after I got the boat about a bolt in front deck they had then (if I remember correctly the brochure had a four wheeler on it). He said that they would not sell the deck without it being fitted to the boat. You may run into the same issues trying to get a floor from the factory. I don’t remember the price, other than expensive…

Scoutin, I will try to send you a pm with the pics of my floor done w/ the mats from Greatmats.com. Not quite sure how to do the photo bucket thing. What I used is alot lighter then what you are looking at from tractor supply and it is gray so not quite as hot. They lay flat on the floor and what you are looking at my want to curl up when it gets hot. I cut the mats out around where the ribs hit the floor on the sides using a jig saw. These mats have enough weight so they do not blow up when running, but at the same time do not weigh the boat down much either. I want to say the box they were shipped in weighed around 40 pounds total. My floor is about 4’X8’. Note the matting is actually plastic, so it holds up well, the filler is the stryofoam, and it never gets exposed to things like the anchor being dropped.

Scoutin, I think I got the photobucket figured out so here are the pics. Dont know what order they are in for sure, but I think they are pretty much self explanatory.

Man it did work, I suprised myself. Don’t consider myself to be too computer savy! I have so many people ask me about the platform, I included 2-shots of it. Cut the aluminum myself and had a good buddy of mine weld it up. Mounted the lights for running the creeks at night on my way to my favorite gigging spots. Have to confess I have not used the platform yet, got a Hewes with a platform that I do most of my flats fishing with.

I like it! Thanks for the pics! Did you try to paint it? Seems like that may work. Looks good.

In this picture on the port side of the boat I see a small filler piece that you had to use to cover the entire floor. I am going to have the same problem as my boat is 50 inches wide on top of the ribs. Can I fit scrap pieces in here or do I need to plan on covering a 5 by 8 foot area.

From the back seat to the from deck is 88 inches and the boat is 50 inches wide on top of the ribs.

Scoutin I bought enough material for a 5 X 9 area, (actual area 4 1/4 by 8 1/2) you can see at the bow where those are half tiles and as you noted a 1/4 tile on the port side. Buy a couple of extra in case you miscut. Not sure what you were asking about paint? I coated the poling platform with a spray compound similar to Line X that they sell at Advanced Auto. So far it is holding up good.

Can you paint the floor? I was wondering if the plastic would hold paint. I was thinking about painting everything war eagle green floor tiles included.

Check some local metal recycling yards for aluminum sheets. I’ve gotten drops that worked great(riveted to ribs thencovered with carpet). You’ll save a lot of money over new aluminum plate. Use 2 part foam underneath. Let it expand and cure then shave it flush. A drain can even be put in to flow to the bilge. I’ve also seen kingboard/starboard used, a bit heavier but it is tough stuff.
