Jon boat washed up

I have been looking around trying to find a good used jon boat and low and behold a jon boat washed up at my parents lake house. It has numbers on it but the most recent registration sticker expired 7-90. Obviously I don’t want to take someone’s boat that is missing, but what should I do about trying to find the owner? Go to DNR with the registration numbers?

I’d first start with the local police and see it’s been reported as stolen. Then check with DNR on the numbers. I think you can look those up online. Also look for hull ID numbers on upper transom, starboard side.

Was it in decent shape and mostly water free? No way it’s been drifting around the lake for 25 years.

I’m assuming it was stashed up in someone’s yard and when the lake rose to record heights, it washed out and came down the lake. I’ve seen a picture and it looks actually in decent shape. I will know more this weekend when I can actually look at it myself and get all the numbers off of it.

I used the web site once to do a registration number check and all it gave me was there was a lien on the boat. No other information. If you call DNR they might give you information or take your info and try to contact the owners.
