Jones Brothers Bateau

Anyone have any experience with these boats? Thinking about a 23.
Thanks.

Not sure about right now, but a few years ago they were solid, over built boats. Their lamination schedules were heavy on material, which means a heavy boat and $$

They seem to be very popular in the Wilmington NC area. Don’t know if there is a website for them up there. See them everywhere.

My only experience is a day inshore trial and fishing trip with one with uncle in the Wrightsville/figure 8 island area. We were comparing it to a comparable Carolina Skiff.

Both boats were good. The value, engine choice and pricing/deal making favored the Carolina skiff. Ended up with Carolina skiff DLV238 with honda power.

Good Luck

Wear a mouth guard and good shoes if running one in choppy water…

The real question is are you talking about the bateau model or the cape fisherman model they are extremely different animals.

As for the bateau they are very well built solid boats. They ride like any other flat bottomed boat i.e. they beat you up in chop compared to v bottom. Overall however I think it rides better and handles chop better than a carolina skiff like a j hull or dlx probably because it is heavier. New they are expensive

The cape fisherman however is more like a overbuilt scout which is designed for fishing plain and simple and is a tank.

Excellent Boats. I go to Morehead City NC often and I see those boats everywhere. Very solid, well built, can’t tear them up. There is no comparison between these boats and a Carolina Skiff. Similar to a Bay Rider from Kencraft.

Yes, being from NC I have ridden in several of them as they are popular due to all the shallow water in the sounds. A couple who we are friends with in NC have a 23’ and it is a great boat on smooth to light choppy conditions, but water conditions like we see in the afternoons in Charleston Inlet/Harbor will make for a very rough and sometimes wet ride. They can handle it though because they are built like tanks…it’s just not a comfortable ride in those rough conditions.

These are great boats and I see a lot of them in my NC travels. They are a first class company and the boats are built like tanks! It is the Cadillac in the skiff world.

The Bayrider is also a very nice Cadillac style skiff. I know of one of those that may be coming on the market soon. It has a Yamaha F150, t-top, power pole, trolling motor and it is immaculate.

Speaking from experience, I second Loosewire’s comments. Get them to throw in one of those nice cushions you stand on as well. I lived in Beaufort, NC for 4 years and can tell you Jones Bros are all over the place there and they are pleasantly overbuilt but expensive. It doesn’t take much chop to make it uncomfortable and will definitely encourage you to slow down.
