Jumping Gar Fight

This longnose gar hit a 1/4-ounce jig used with medium spin tackle and 12-pound braided line intended for other species, and put on a tough fight, complete with jumps and head thrashing. The toothy gar was released unharmed, at was estimated at nearly 5 feet in length, weighing 20 to 25 pounds.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic9sRbDimco

Cool ya they tailwalk like a marlin sometimes

Believe it or not, they are very good eating. I’ve tried it. You need tin snips to get through their armor but underneath are two very clean white boneless tenderloin-looking fillets. The texture takes a little getting used to when cooked. A little rubbery but the flavor is quite good.

I couldn’t tell you how many I’ve threw back or given to bank fishermen. I’ll eat most anything, but never tried a gar. They usually have a funky smell IMO, kind of reminds me of a cuda.

Now are you pulling our leg, or serious?

I’ve never tried them, but here’s what you do (supposedly). Doesn’t look too bad.
