We had one bigger than that jump for us when we were fishing for them…the momma broke off, but we caught her 175lb mate. One of the most awesome, yet scariest things I’ve seen (the big mako jumped straight towards our boat before tailwhipping the main line above 15’ bimini and 15’ cable).
Had a 8 ft one on the line for 45 mins back in June we were rolling out and saw some black fin tuna coming out the water so we spun around and deployed the spread and hooked up with the mako on the down rigger, when it jumped a few times and I got realized what was going on I quickly passed the rod off I was surprised how long the mono leader held up!
GREAT REPORT!!!
Having seen their response to the hook I have placed them way up on the list of game fish!
Does anyone here know if this sort of jumping is standard procedure for Makos?
Apparently they require a very long wire or cable leader; the longer the better.

Pretty standard behavior
Those jumps are spectacular!
We got our mako on a flouro leader pulling darts for blackfin.

Wow, that’s just amazing!
2000 Scout 175 Sportfish
I caught one on a thin florocarbon leader on a tuna feather… It jumped like hell and took an hour to reel in and we had to keep it on the same side of the boat the whole time so that the line didn’t cross the teeth. Tasty Tasty! Never had much better eating than a mako.
