June 17-22 Stono River

Well, we had some good old friends in town last week. One of the guys, back in the day, taught me a lot about fishing for blues off of the Jersey shore. The other guy was a novice fisherman (holds spinning reel upside down!). Anyway, before they came to visit I was busy telling them how great it was catching a redfish and that I knew all of these great spots and we would have a great time!! We spent one day fishing the Stono from Wapoo down to Kiawah. I caught two whitings, they caught two stingrays. I told them “well at least I know of a sure-fire shark spot” . “Great” they said!! That didn’t work out either. Spent a good portion of the day on Sandy Point, relaxing!
Friday, fished from Limehouse out towards Wadmallaw. “Just wait” I told them “I know some really good redfish spots, you’ll even be able to see them swimming past the boat!!” More stingrays! The novice says “the hell with you guys,…I’m not fishing along the grass lines, I’ll throw my line out on the other side”. Well he at least caught two small black tips, all we caught were stingrays!
They left on Saturday morning, with no redfish or trout to show for it. Saturday afternoon my wife and I went out to fish the rising tide, to the same places we tried on the falling tide on Friday morning. Low and behold, a 27" redfish! I emailed them the picture!
You just never know!!

The water was brown as charleston sweet tea, but mostly warm (75-80) and clear both days.

Here’s a satisfied novice catching his first “shark”

and here’s the redfish that I wished he had caught the day before!

Hmmm, that dock looks very familiar. The reds there always have great color. I have had better luck on the incoming (1 to 3 hours after the low tide) there recently.
