Slept in and left the dock at 5am. Lines in by 7:30. Found some clean, blue water NorthEast of the hole in about 400-700ft of water. Temperature (77) wasn’t anything remarkable but the current was ripping. Picked dolphin up in Ones and Twos all day.
The planer rod was hot all day. If we weren’t hooked up on it, it was being whacked and attracting strikes to the other lines. We picked up our two sails for the day under those same circumstances. If you are not running a planer rod in your spread you need to start!
Hot colors for the day were pink/white/mylar, blue/white/mylar, and purple/black/mylar.
Of Note:
The first sail of the day was caught by a first-time ever angler.
The second sail was caught by her boyfriend and that was his first billfish as well.
It was an awesome day offshore with some great friends.
If I have left out any details about the trip that you would like to know, please feel free to PM me.
Late Edit:
If you notice the dolphin chasing flyers all over the place, take two yummee flying fish and put one on each long rigger. Let out about about 100 or so feet of line and then start reeling like hell and hold on!
Had a few fish come in like gang busters jumping completely out of the water to nail the lures.
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
Congrats on the trip Matt!! Thats a strong day!! We tried to raise you on the radio but we figured you was a bit to far north but was gonna see!! Congrats on the fish again!!! Strong year you’ve had so far!!
Kut, we’ve had a lot of luck on 50-80lb fluoro leaders with either naked ballyhoo or blue/white Lil stubby lures run off the long rigger. They love to come up and knock the baits around and it takes a drop back.or two to come tight.
