Looking to bring my family down and would like the kids to catch some fish. Financially, I can’t afford to get a charter right now. We will be staying with family at a spot in IOP. I’m thinking of taking the kids from the pier in IOP or Mount Pleasant or even surf fishing IOP or Breach Inlet. Suggestions?
For those I’ve met before on here, our ministry @YorkSCCTO is still going strong. Looking to take the kids to FL next summer for the first time. Any connections that you know might be willing to partner with a youth fishing ministry, let me know. This summer we will be in Charleston with a buddy from here in June and Murrells Inlet in July.

The pier at IOP is private, for Sea Cabin residents/tenants, only. I’ll be at the Sea Cabin’s 6/13-19, maybe you can come fish as my guest, during that time?
We do pretty good with Black Drum, Red’s, Sheep’s, and Whiting.
How old are your kids? I might be able to put ‘em on a Bonnet Head. That’s an exciting adventure for most anglers.
I’ve never had much luck fishing Breech Inlet, as often as I’ve tried.

Thanks, we are there from June 2-4 but in a house up the street off Beachside Drive. I guess we could surf fish.
My kids are 3, 7, and 10… but I run a fishing and hunting ministry for kids so they have experiences most kids twice their age don’t. I have a system where we hook paracord from a rod to their life vest and then another from their life vest to me so they get to totally fight big fish without a fear of them going in or losing the rod. So normally by 4 they have caught a catfish over 20 lbs., and my 7 and 10 yr olds caught 3+ ft sharks by age 6. So not typical for kids from the piedmont of SC.
This trip however we really want to get our 3 yr old on something. This will be his first time fishing. He’s watched others but we want him to catch his first fish on this trip so one day he can take his kid to the same spot if he wants to let them catch theirs where he did. He’s been practicing his casting, but on the surf I’ll take care of that of course. We think it might be cool if he caught a bonnet head, spinner shark, or something similar for his first fish.
I did try Breech one time but nothing. I did also think about going to the pier at Mount Pleasant under the bridge. I’ve never heard rather it is a good spot or not though.
I have a pic of my daughter at two years old waving at me from the end of the IOP Pier. She will be twenty seven this August.
She out fishes all of the guys, and has better gear, too!
Good luck on your trip to IOP! We do better on Bonnet Head’s in the early evening. And, you’ll have a better experience when the swimmers are gone from the public side of the pier. Only use fresh, quartered, Blue Crab for bait. Once you catch one keep your casts to the same area, as more are usually following the scent trail to your bait.
Great suggestions. Thanks
That is your best bet. There are good fish to be caught there. Good sheepshead too. Look up jiggin jerry on YouTube.
