Had an amazing time. We arrived on Chokoloskee Island Sunday before last (3/24) and fished that afternoon. Did pretty well catching one keeper redfish who ended up being the guest of honor at dinner and a couple of trout one of which joined the redfish for dinner. Otherwise, we let everything go including other trout, mangrove snapper and some under slot snook. Most caught on live shrimp but some on plastics.
On Monday morning we chased bait for a good while and caught all we would in one net cast. Not sure what they were. Green back and silver below. We started fishing and I quickly landed another slot red. We went to a few more spots with little success other than mangrove snapper. Next we went to our buddy’s Snook honey hole to use the live bait we had caught in the morning. It was a narrow creek and we tied off to the mangroves on one side and casted bait to the outside curve 15 feet away on the other side. That’s the first time I’ve seen Snook caught in the mangroves. It was awesome - they feed so violently. We caught about 15 including one keeper that was 30 inches. Later in the evening we managed another keeper red, a couple snook and trout.
Fished again on Tuesday and caught another good load including an over slot black drum and two snook - all released except one keeper trout. We were feeding 5 people and had some fresh Snook left from Monday.
It was my first trip to the Everglades and hopefully not my last. A great time all around. Great family, friends, fishing and eating.
