This is my personal best 24 pounds. This fish was caught right around Spence on May 9 of last year in 30 foot of water on a down rod. The mount was done by Summer’s Tax in the St Philips community which is just outside of Newberry. If you have any critters you want to mount he can do it all and is very good.

That is a nice looking mount. I have not used that taxidermist before.
I had my 50 lb’er and a couple over 35 lbs. mounted by Dreher Island Taxidermy. I was pleased with the mounts at the time, but the real test is “what do they look like in 2-3 years”? I have some others mounted by someone differently, and they have a lot of “yellowing” in the mouth and gills.
Rick, obviously you can get a mount with the “real” fish, but you can also get a fiberglass replica made. You’ll want to take a couple pictures of the actual catch (so the mount may be painted to match), weight it, and measure the length, and girth in a couple places (so they can get a “blank” to match). Typical costs are about 12-14 dollars per inch. We had Patti’s done at Raven’s in Newberry and we’re very pleased. One advantage of the fiberglass replica is that it does not deteriorate. Rather than adding our picture onto controlfreak’s post, I will e-mail you a picture of it.
The way I see it ANYONE can call a taxidermist and say make this fish for me and give them measurement. But when the actual fish is sitting on the wall it’s Def something special. I have my one fish on the wall. I won’t put another on there until that magic freshwater 50# bites… I could go the saltwater route but that is like cheating. .lol… we need to start a thread of mounts with names of companies to give people options.

That is the actual fish I caught. While I think the replica fish are fine I agree with Murrymaker about calling and having a fish made. Now the cost varies but I did not pay anywhere close to 12 or 14 dollars a inch the reason being is that I spend alot of money with this taxidermist. I have had him do about every critter and fish that is native to our area. The yellowing that Rick K talks about is a concern if the job is not done right(I also think the materials these guys use now are better so back in the day even a good taxidermist had some issues with fish yellowing). I have fish 10 plus years old that Summers Taxidermy has done for me and they still look as good as the day he finished them. As for my next goal as far as Stripers go It will have to be 35lbs to get it mounted.

The guy that weighed the 31 lb. fish at Richard’s about a month or so ago is getting Keith Crout to mount it. Keith quoted him $13 per inch and the fish was ~39.5" long. FYI.

i used keith one time to mount my sons two 10 pointers that he killed in two days on a trip we took to west texas. took forever and when we got them back one was a supposedly european mount and the other had two tines missing. said he dropped it. lesson learned. good luck.,
IMHO, Keith does great work on fish. I don’t hunt; so I don’t have an opinion on his deer work. He did a great job on a white perch that I caught which would have been a state record had I not left it in the cooler for 36 hours before weighing it:imp: Keith also repainted a 22 pound striper for me that looked ridiculous. Now it looks like the real McCoy! The guy who got the 31 will not be disappointed. I need to post some pics of my 2 samples of Keith’s work. I’m a fan!
