The summer fish kill seems to be something much more substantial than in the past. I heard from someone the other day that as many as 18,000 may have died. Don’t know where he got that information but was curious if anyone knows how this years kill compares to past years?
I’ve haven’t heard any total numbers but dnr classified it as severe. They said that during the early parts of the kill that 80% of them were over 21".
Then would it make sense for the DNR to make a temporary adjustment to the Striper fishing regulations?? Just a thought.
No adjustment will be made. We go through this every 4-6yrs. They may just up the stocking numbers the next year or 2 but that’s it. It just means you may have to work a little harder to find keepers. But from the sounds of reports I have gotten in the last couple weeks, I don’t think we will see a real problem finding keepers this winter.
The kill we had pretty much only lasted a week or so it seems like. Last count I heard/read was like 1100 fish, but that’s what was counted, no telling how many sunk but I wouldn’t think 17k sank to the bottom.
Just continue to fish as you do and release the big ones this fall/winter/spring…
And remember 5 and done is still in effect till oct 1st

Ron Ahle from the DNR reported at the MSC meeting last Tuesday that they counted around 1900 floaters which makes this year’s kill even more severe than 2010. However, he feels we may not see the profound effect on keeper sized fish due to the population being able to recover after 6 years with no significant damage. The gill net surveys will give more accurate information.

What seems odd to me is how healthy the fish being caught now are. They always seem to bite real well about this time, but often are skinny as a rail. The ones I’m catching seem to be healthier than most years where we didn’t have a fish kill.
I went a few eves/night this pastime week and probably had 75% legit keepers. This evening was 4 of 5. Good to see they’re back to feeding real aggressively again 2. I had one this evening with an 8" BP spoon 3/4 down his throat.
