Just Moved to James Island

Hi all, I just moved to James Island from Wilmington, NC and am trying g to prepare for the upcoming season. Grew up inshore and offshore fishing and served in the Coast Guard. However, I’m in a brand new area now and am trying to learn it fast.

I was hoping to gain some general knowledge from y’all…

I plan on using the ramp at Sol Legare BC I think Folly will be too crowded and the ramp at Riverland Terrace has crazy currents and lots of boat traffic. Thoughts?

I bought a top spot chart for the Stono River area and have been studying it often. Nothing beats personal experience on the water, but I thought I might hire a guide for a day to show me around. Any reccomendations for the lower stono area?

Ill be fishing in a 17’ skiff with a 30hp. All inshore

Any good bars or restaurants on the water?

With the exceptions of specific fishing holes, I’d appreciate and general knowledge you could throw my way for life on or off the water.

Thanks fellas!

With the exception of specific spots, I’d appreciate

Welcome to Jim Isle. You are correct on ramp choice, Folly is not bad in the fall and winter, but late spring and summer are crazy, just getting to the ramp can take an hour from Fort Johnson Rd. Yes current at Riverland Terrace is bad not to mention wakes. Sol Legare is not bad, just make sure you lock it up tight, it has gotten better in recent years but still can bad after dark. Lots of great fishing in the Stono, Kiawah, and Folly. Get ahold of and charter Captain John Ward, Affinity Charters. He fishes out of Kiawah, but runs north from there to hit the Folly, Stono and Northern Kiawah daily. John is a good ole Jim Island boy, let him know you want to accelerate the learning curve and he will help you out. Also check out seminars at Haddrells and Charleston Angler, the info they share is applicable to almost all areas of the lowcountry “back waters.”

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

2nd John Ward. real good guy.

Just watch sol Legare on a strong southwest or northeast with wind bucking the tide, it can stack up in the Stono pretty quick.
