Left City Marina at 430 AM and pushed offshore along the 350 line. Ocean was beautiful. We stopped in 140 ft to try and find a wahoo. Fished for an hour without any signs of life in the ocean. Picked up and ran to 350 feet. Found fantastic water with good temps, bait in the water column, birds, and a well defined edge. Immediately had a sailfish come up behind the dredge and ate the flat line. Couldn’t keep a hook in him. Kept fishing the edge and caught a shark. Put the spread back out and continued to fish the edge. About an hour later, mouse trap reel starts clicking. Look back and see a bill slapping the bait. The fish then turned around and inhaled the bait. Hooked up on a nice blue marlin. Cleared the lines and saw that the fish took 3/4 of the spool in about 3 minutes. She put on a helluva show. Chased her down and got a lot of line back. All in all had her on the line for 45 min. Got her super close to the boat but couldn’t get a hand on the leader. On her last run away from the boat, the hook slid out of her mouth. Heartbreaking but awesome experience. Fished another 3-4 hours without a bite. Beautiful ocean but incredibly hot day. Glad to see some blue ones still around. Hopefully we will have a sail bite this fall like we did 5-6 years ago.
