Got up at 330 and woke up to rain & lightning. Called the group of guys going and we decided to meet at the boat at 6 and hopefully the storm would have moved on out of the area. When we all got to the boat, it was still drizzling but looked promising on the radar so we went ahead and left. Got to the Jetties and it was bumpier than expected. Decided to fish the 60 and see if the ocean would lay down.
The radar showed that the 60 was covered in rain but we didn’t see any lightning so we started fishing. From my guess it was steady 15kts out of the NE the entire time. First line in, we miss a nice king. Got 5 lines in the water and started fishing. Not long after, the right long goes off and it’s a sailfish. We were just as surprised as anyone else who my be reading this. The depth finder said 57 ft. Released the sail and kept fishing. Ended up with 5 bonitas. Started trolling towards home and the left long goes off and it’s another sailfish! Depth finder said 45 ft. I have never encountered anything like that at the 60! Released that fish and headed towards home. Saw two water spouts over IOP and made it through the jetties. Saw a submarine being escorted into the Harbor which was a cool sight. We ended the day at Reds up Shem Creek by 1PM.
Crazy weather, crazy day, crazy fishing, but it was unforgettable and it still beat going to work!
We saw it too, tried to make it to the 60 out of desperation but never got there. We were marking lightning everywhere on the sirius. Fought it for a few hours and called it quits.
Heard you talking to the blue boy about the sails. Pretty cool. We ancored at the jettys and waited but to no avail. We watched a whole bunch of people turn back. Weatherman missed that forcast.
Btodag, def wish I had pics but the ocean and the rain kept us from pulling out the camera. The sails were on the smaller side of most Atlantic sails.
Magezzi, be glad you didn’t go! We were pulling ballyhoo
Bwilliams, weatherman couldn’t have gotten it anymore wrong. It was bumpy & rainy. Glad y’all were safe and didn’t push it. Had another buddy in a 29 footer that made it to 140 ft, caught one king, and came home. Let me know when y’all go again.
Was the guy with the king in a wrapped contender? Someone was anchored at the jetties in a contender with what looked to be two kids holding a king as we came in. May e that was bwilliams?
