I am looking for a Kayak for this summer. I would like a kayak that provides a good combination of fishibilty and one that I can just use for exercise. This will be my first Kayak so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
I found that info on a couple of the mfg. web sites. They tell what all the diff. terms mean and which yak to get for what you want it to do. The biggest recommendation I saw was to test out a boat before you buy it!!

The plan is to be in-town the 29th of this month. I might be allowed to go fishing that weekend!! I also want to make it to the boat show.
As I type, I am reading the fishing limits and regs. So, I will be ready to go.

Cobra Explorer…you can get them with rod holders…good stability and length. They are sold throughout Florida, There is a dealer in Mt Pleasant, yet I can never get them to answer their phone. Good Luck- See you on the flats!
That Cobra looks nice. Another boat you may want to look at is the Ocean Kayak Caper. I’ve fished out of that model a couple of times and loved it. Very easy to maneuver and very dry. I’m probably going to purchase one soon (I own a Hobie Odyssey tandem; great boat but a pain to handle by yourself due to it’s size).
I spoke w/ Dee at Ludens Outfitters and he said they were expecting a new shipment of Capers anytime now. You may want to call them and check one out.
i’m looking at a sit-on-top for fishing… I’ve found it a little difficult fly fishing from a decked touring boat (perception vizcaya, which I love for speed and touring). I’m leaning towards the wilderness systems tarpon 140… I’m a fan of longer boats, they track so much better than the short ones, and are faster. Both of these factors, speed & tracking, make a big difference over along day of paddling. the “tarpon” has a hull of a touring boat with the sit-on-top deck. I’m going to test paddle the tarpon 120 in the next few weeks but am really leaning toward the 14’ 140.
as always try before you buy, there where alot of boats i thought i would really like but, absolutely HATED after paddling. and it’s all personal feel, how you fit and feel in the boat.
happy paddling, I’ll post a review of the tarpon after i get in one!

Call blackwater adventures in Pinopolis SC. This guy is an outfitter that uses premium kayaks and sells them off every 1 or 2 years. I’ve bought 2 for half of retail with nice seats and paddles. He knows what he is talking about. He will ask you what you will be using it for and make suggestions. Ex: wide yak = comfort & stability able to carry lots of stuff or skinny yak = way less stability, less comfort but manuverabilty and speed against tide and wind. I chose the skinny. Have a friend with a wide yak, they have a very difficult time paddling against the tide so much so you kill alot of time waiting for them it can become a pain fishing with them because they slow you down. I would never buy a kayak for comfort or to haul stuff around. Go skinny and get used to keeping your balance and go where you want to go.
