Kayak Anchor help

Hoping to get down to Murrells Inlet or Pawleys Island soon & need some help with anchor size. So far I have just done local fishing with it & have not had any current to worry about.
I have a 10 foot sit on top & was wondering what size anchor I would need.
Will I need any chain & if so how much & what size do you think?
Any help would be great, thanks guys.

I have a small folding kayak anchor with about 25 ft. of cord and it is attached to an anchor trolley. It works real well. I also have a stick it pin anchor for shallow water I made myself.
Here are a couple of links.

I have already rigged a anchor trolly & made me a stick it pin I have been using at lakes around home. The only thing I need now is an anchor.
What weight of anchor do you use, I have seen them in 1.5#, 3#, & 5#?
Also, did you add any chain between the anchor & rope?
I use chain with my boat anchor but not sure if it would be needed on a kayak?

3-lb is a good size for a kayak. I never used any chain with my anchors.

Thanks guys. I was hoping I wouldn’t need any chain.

I have the 3# anchor, no chain. It works great. I had a 1.5#, but it wouldn’t hold very well.

I use a little 3 lbs grapple style. Most of the time I keep the ‘grapples’ taped closed, no chain and about 25 ft of cord and then 2 spare 25 ft cords for GP. I will say, rig the anchor with a release or a cord that you can break / get rid of. Large wakes, unexpected currents, and so on can get you into a bad place real fast.

ReelShock, I was thinking of putting a float on the boat end of the anchor line so if I get into bad spot I can un-tie the line & toss it over & pick it up later. Does that sound like it would work?

Be careful using an anchor on your kayak

An anchor trolley with a strong current putting your anchor down you can really get caught sideways in a hurry

Be Careful

Reeldrag,
I have a large float on the end of my anchor line with a carabiner clip. It clips to the ring on the the trolley. If I get in trouble all I have to do is quickly unhook the line and drop it. When all is good, I just go grab the float and retrieve my anchor.

That is kind of what I was thinking. I will be cautous of where I use an anchor so not to put my self into a bad situation.
Thanks for all the help / advice guys.

Not sure if anyone has suggested but put a clam cleat on your boat to secure the line at the boat, rather than a regular cleat that you have to tie off. You get a quick and easy release, a lot safer.

looks like that may be a good idea. Thanks.

+1
I actually use two cleats mounted right near the seat for easy access. One catches the line if the anchor is at the bow and one for the stern. like this:

Those are the lowest profile cleats I’ve ever come across. Dave at Time Out ordered them for me.

It’s important to tie the anchor rope to the bottom of the anchor but connected to the top with a breakaway link. Scroll down this page and see an example on a grapnel anchor.

I have a couple of spots I fish with deep water, rocky bottom and a ripping current. It can get somewhat dangerous trying to free up a stuck anchor.

Those cleats look pretty cool. Mine are a minor irritant when I want to fish side saddle.

And definitely yes to rigging the anchor that way. I use a 1kg bruce/claw style that is great but in certain areas like sandy or muddy bottoms you want to be real careful about the current.

When I drop an anchor
#1 I want it to hold ? 21/2ft of chain + 3lbs anchor ? nothing worse than not staying in place
#2 I have lost anchors in the past with the electrical 8lbs tie rap ? never loose another anchor ? you can break tie wrap and pull out not a problem
#3 Don’t forget the rode/ length of line rule 3ft of of line to each ft of depth ? if not a large wake or wave can swamp you
