Gave up on finding a used boat trailer so I am purchasing a new jon boat trailer to use as a kayak trailer. My question is this: the board runners with carpet on them that are found on trailers will this harm my kayak or should I modify a use schedule 40 pvc pipe?
I’m new to this forum and fishing (long time gone)so please have patience with me and the Hobie Outback I purchased as a pre retirement gift to myself.
Welcome to the board! There is a lot of help available here,I just throw my kayak in the back of my truck and haven’t needed a trailer. Not sure why the carpet would react with your kayak? Might try to use a piece of 2" pvc ripped in two with a table saw and screwed to the carpeted runners!
Thank you boatpoor, I’m glad to be here. I’ve learned a lot already before joining and I expect to learn more. I have trouble unloading from the truck bed at the boat landing and vice versa. The kayak weighs approx. 90lbs at 12’, now while a level ground no problem handling. I haven’t seen any youtube on this, it always shows on flat ground.
i use a jetski trailer for my 16’ canoe. carpet bunks work just fine.

my mother in law bought a kayak trailer kit online. it shipped directly to her house and i assembled it in about 2-3 hours, greased the hubs and it was good to go. pretty legit trailer. think it ran her about $500
something like this
19’ American Skiff Coral Bay
I built one last year from an old trailer. Made wood runners covered in marine carpet for the bottom 2 and have removable racks that will hold 2 more on top. The carpet will not hurt the kayaks.

Thank you everyone. I actually bought the trailer that Hundo6 mother in law has without the tandem kayak kit. I am having the light set up raised by about 3 feet and leaning a little out to make the trailer more visible for me to see pulling/backing and keeping them out of the water. I was never worried about traffic seeing my taillights or anything since the boat sets so low on the trailer and my truck lights were always seen.
