Kayak Brands

What yaks do y’all use?
Make, model, length. How you rate them.
Thanks,
Jeremy

[:)I use the ocean kayak “scrambler xt” and the wife has her own “scrambler”. Mine is about 13’ and hers is 12, I believe.

Rating is done on different levels and the industry probably has it’s own way, but I rate mine on how functional it is for my purpose. I tried many before coming to a final decision.

I sold my “regular boat” after getting the yaks. I have much less hassle at boat landings as you don’t need one for those.

I use a Keewee II, made by Aquaterra. They are light, dry, roomy and stable. Had mine for fifteen years and I still use it all the time.

Ocean Kayak, Scrambler & Scrambler XT! Thinking of selling if you would be interested. E-mail me…

Me and a buddy just got into yaking. Bought a pair of Cobra Explores. Sit on tops, very stable and comfortable. Looking forward to 1st fish.:smiley:

I have a 13 ft.Manteo from Wilderness Systems. Pretty good all around kayak.

Ocean Kayak Malibu Two, Sit on Top , Purchased last year, used mainly around creeks around Edisto, wanted yak that held two people due to having back surgery several years ago and not sure how single would work out, nothing but good things to say about the Malibu Two, very stable, plenty of room, easy to get in and out. Just waiting for another few weeks to head back to Edisto.

I also have the Ocean Scrambler XT. Hey, Marshmellow, I think I may know you. Are you familiar with the phrase “pulling a Fred”. If not, no problem and i enjoy your posts.

jptsails,
How much for that Scrambler? How about the XT?

I have Tarpon, sixteen feet long by Wilderness Systems. I don’t recommend it for coming in through the surf, but other than that, I am pretty happy with it. I do wish it had a tankwell. I am looking at another Tarpon with a tankwell, either the fourteen or twelve footer.

PAPA, why not recommended for coming in through the surf? just curious… am considering the 14’ one as a second boat. was hoping it would do well in the surf because of the hull design.

It has a tendency to dump you in the surf. They call it “pearling” I believe. I guess because while you are bottoms up, you can look for pearls.
Goining out through the surf is no problem, just coming back in. I think it would be because it is difficult to turn due to the excellent tracking. You can’t make the minute adjustments necessary to keep straight. Somebody out there probably has the answer.

Tanks A Lot, Yes apparently you do know me, or some of my infamous friends! We have had a lot of laughs over that one! Thanks for the kind word on my posts. I assume we have a mutual friend?

I musy be the odd-ball. I use a Hobie Outback. It allows me to fish as I move from spot to spot.

So many fish, so little time.

I think I’m the odd one. I use a old towne canoe. It’s great for the creeks. You sit up higher and can carry all your junk (cooler, front and rear bait buckets, anchor, four poles…). Don’t like going near the mouths of the creeks near the big rivers though, hate to dump everything.

I have not tested one yet, but the yak that is atop the list right now is the Pungo 140 by Wilderness Systems. Should be in the next 2 months.

I got the pungo 140. Awesome, can’t say enought good about it’s “practicality” for fishing. Not great coming thru the surf, tends to broach (nose goes under water), which flips ya in a second. Get the skirt, your gonna need it with it’s large cockpit.
I took mine out today from Filbins creek in cooper to Pier alpha. i only got a garfish, but was looking for sheepshead.

Wilderness systems has a Tarpon 140 that was designed for fishing. Its a great kayak.
