While fishing at Remley’s, al8995 and I saw a man in the water picking his kayak up and doing practice drills in case of emergency. I was wondering if any of the rest of you have ever practiced any emergency drills or if any of you carry a first aid kit with you on fishing trips. If so, what kind of drills do you practice and what do you carry in your first aid kits?
I have never done any emergency drills and don’t even know where to start in doing so.
I ALWAYS have some first aid with me that I use regularly, such as bandaids, neosporin, an epi-pen, benadryl, tylenol, prescription medications, gauze, nitrile gloves, sunblock, chapstick, and other items like that. Today I decided to expand my first aid kit into much more. I even have an emergency “toilet in a bag.”
Here is my list:
Assorted Sizes of Bandaids
Nitrile Gloves
Gauze
Rolling Gauze
Neosporin
Medical Tape
Sunblock
2 Bandanas
QTips
Chapstick
Calamine Lotion
Aleve
Tylenol
Benadryl
Benadryl Cream
Epi-Pen
Prescription Medications
Emergency Contact Information
Filled Water Bottle
Tampons (Great for stopping emergency bleeding)
Peppermint Candies (for nausea)
Cold Press
Eye Drops
Allergy Nose Spray
Alcohol Swabs
Tweezers
Fingernail clippers
Emergency Blanket
Trash Bag
Toilet Paper
Hemorrhoid Care
Lotion
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Dental Floss
Mouth Wash
Glow Stick
Headlight
Thermometer
Ziploc Bags
I’d like to get these items to add to the list:
Cotton Swabs
Petroleum Jelly
Blister Treatment like Mole Skin
Duct Tape (small roll)
Asprin
Hand Sanitizer
Wound Cleaner
Hydrogen Peroxide
Ace Bandage
Splinting Kit
Stingray First Aid Kit (Does anyone have one of these or ever used one?)
QuickClot
Medical Scissors
Waterproof Matches or Other Fire Starter
Compass and Map (especially if I get separated, since I don’t know all of the areas that well)
Waterproof box for the First Aid Kit to be in
Are there any other things I should consider adding to the list? I have a whistle tucked away in my life jac
You have a nice list of stuff - you’ll be a floating hospital.
I have a little first aid kit, about the size of a wallet, and it has things like band-aids, gauze, tape, and antibacterial wipes. I have a whistle and small knife in my PFD.
lol you are prepared! When I read quickclot I immediatly thought of an IFAC and a bullet wound lol. I’ve purposely flipped mine over and put it back up right. It was very easy due to the design but my cooler made it a little awkward. Paddle leash is a great idea! I need to keep an extra paddle under my hatch just incase. lol toilet in a bag, you’ve thought of it all. I keep a small first aid kit in one of my compartments next to the live well but it only has basic stuff like alcohol wipes and bandaids. I also keep an air horn readily accessible incase someone decides to try and run me over. I’ve never heard of a stingray kit but that would be a good idea, especially since you insist on rescuing those nasty things I have a gps on my fishfinder which could come in handy if you do some traveling or open ocean. I think a VHF would also be smart and a neccessity if you go off shore. I think if you have a concealed carry permit it would be wise to use it, never know what kind of situation you can get into and you’re very vulnerable in a kayak. I keep a knife on me at all times as well.

I keep my knife and big scissors with my tackle, but I should definitely put an extra knife in my PFD. I should also get s radio to call for help if need be. I always have my cell phone, but it isn’t waterproof and reception might not be reliable enough. I really hope nothing bad ever happens to any of us out on the water, but you never know. I was almost dumped out of my kayak by a guy on a jet ski when I was by myself and if I had gone over board I would have landed on an oyster bed. I learned from experience a long time ago to never think “That bad thing could never happen to me. It happens to other people you hear about on the news, but not to me.”
A handheld VHF is good too, for emergencies and comm…there are a few of us on here who use them to keep touch, when we’re fishing together and out of sight. My model has a weather channel and will give an audible tone when it receives a weather alert.
I always carry a first-aid kit in my kayak, a knife on my PFD or person and a VHF in my console. EVERYONE should know how to re-enter a capsized kayak before ever leaving the dock.
Sarah, Are you planning on being lost at sea? That’s a ton of crap to be lugging around. You might want to add a pint of vodka and some beef jerky. They’re much more important than fingernail clippers and hemorroid cream. Unless your sitting on a donut while paddling.

I figured that I could also use the same first aid kit for hiking and other outdoor activities as well.
And if you end up breaking a nail, I can rush over to shape it up for you.

I do need to hurry up and get my CWP. When I told my husband about the stingray kit, he immediately thought it was great idea! I am going to do more research and order one or two, but this is where I first found them.
Thats cool that those kits exist. Theirs a guy that lives in summerville that does the concealed course, you can find him on facebook by looking up todd mullis. He has excellent reviews and a great reputation. I think he charges $60 and he can even come to your home to teach you then meet him at the range for the shooting portion. My wife is going to get hers through him. Luckily I didn’t have to take the course, I just sent in a copy of my firing record. I bet SLED headquarters wasn’t too happy about digging through 4 pages of weapons qualifications lol maybe thats why it took 3 months to get my permit!

Winter time. I have a dry bag with a change of clothes your warmest things: wool, gloves, socks and a fire starter. Had a friend dump on a day with a high of 37. He only said one thing. Please next time bring socks.
You don’t need a CWP if you are fishing or traveling to/from your fishing spot(s). Good to have one anyway though, for all the other times when you are not fishing.
I’m not sure the legalities of open carry vs concealed when fishing, as the law is not very clear on how you carry while fishing. One of my fishing friends has pics of him with his pistol holstered on his life-jacket and has never been hassled about it.

You’re correct, you don’t need to have a CWP as long as you have a fishing license and you’re fishing or on your way to or from a fishing location. Technically you can’t carry your pistol exposed like your buddy does. SC isn’t an open carry state so it has to be concealed. If he comes across the wrong cop he probably won’t have a good day. Another fun fact is that in SC you can carry a concealed weapon in your glove box or closed console in your vehicle without a permit, as long as you’re allowed to legally posses it. SC states that your vehicle is an extension of your home. As always, if you get pulled over notify the officer of the weapon immediately.

Thats a good video! I think any sit on top is easy to get back into but I guess some people might struggle. I practiced a few times in each of my sit on tops and I was able to get it the first try. The malibu is pretty easy, probably because its almost 3 feet wide lol.

The first time I used my kayak I was dumped out several times by breaker waves. I was able to get back in the kayak without any problem, but I also didn’t have any gear with me. I should go out and practice with my gear and maybe even practice when the temps really cool down to practice getting myself warmed back up. I can put my first aid gear and an extra set of clothes in a waterproof bag and tuck them into a backpack.
