How about let’s plan this thing? I’ve got a couple of other guys that are willing to come and hang out as safety boats too.
A few of us talked about this a couple of weeks ago (NikonJedi I believe) and with the warmer weather coming around, it is now time to do this thing. I think it will be interesting to say the least.
First of all who is interested in a kayak only fishing tournament on the Saturday of May 31st?
There was talk before about everyone going to the nearshore reef, but that will be up to all of the anglers involved and what they want to do. If you guys don’t want to do the nearshore thing, we can move the party inshore to a few isolated spots on the wando or where ever you guys want. If it is a nice day, there will certainly be boat traffic all around the jetties.
If the concensous was to fish the reef, the tide on May 31 has a low at 11:30AM. This should aid in the fact that people will be paddling from Remley’s to the nearshore reef in the AM. After fishing for a few hours and the tide turns, it should be somewhat easy to paddle back considering the tide will be coming in after 12. Again, all this if only the weather cooperates.
Safety will be the number one condition dictating our fishing efforts on that day. I have some extra VHF handhelds for those that would feel better with them…or if you have your own, bring that. Handheld VHF 5W radios can be had for about $99 in most local marine stores. Not to mention that the standard cell phone will work just fine at the nearshore reef.
None of the categories have been worked out yet. I was thinking biggest sheep, biggest trout, biggest flounder, redfish with the most spots (pictures can be substituted for those wishing to practice catch and release.) You know, the usual suspects. It’s kind of up to you guys. We’ll figure out prizes of somesort too.
I think its a good idea to all put in at the same ramp if possible. Or have a common starting place for everyone to meet at a certain time. Just to be safe and have an accurate headcount.
We could always throw the kayaks in the boat and drop people off if need be.
I’m game too! But also not going to paddle to the reef from Remlys. I’ll be an out-of-shape near-shorer. It would be fun to have a fleet of ‘yaks headin’ out though.
Have y’all ever paddled offshore before?..our nice SE breeze(10-15) in the PM can blow and make you paddle like hell just to make a little head way or just to stay where you are. I think a mother boat would be the way to go!
I was thinking later in June… let the water warm up a little more and the wind to die down a bit… I still want to make a couple of test runs with the yak to see how it is just paddling around… the last few times I have been out in a power boat it wasn’t good… a yak would stand a poor chance of staying upright much less trying to fight a fish of any size in those swells… I am doing a little more research and will get back on both forums with a more firm date and some more info… depending on the swells anyone who wants to paddle out from Remleys is more than welcome but If I paddle out I’ll be launching from the beach
If this is going to happen, we probably need people to commit by the end of this week.
Let’s make Friday the deadline for committments for the yakers.
Please post the dates you are available to do this.
It would also be a good idea to have everyone leave from the same place, so that an accurate headcount would take place and allow the “safety boats” to better keep an eye on people. I think the beach is a great place if everyone can meet there.
What do you guys think?
Meet at 8AM on TBD Date on Sullivan’s? Return to the beach by 3pm. Meet somewhere close by afterwards for some eats and cold beverages?
I will be putting my boat in at Remley’s.
Does anyone else want to volunteer as a safety boat?
Its ~4.5 mile paddle/pedal from SI beach to the first wreck. 4.5 wont bother a lot of folks, but just remember it might be against wind/tide one way or the other, which canmake 4.5 feel like a good solid 10.
I enjoy it either way, but just so you know the distance.
I like the 28th… Gives us enough time to get final plans and to reely make sure this will be a safe event… I know there are fish there so I am more concerned wiht the safety aspect of this… 23… what days are good for you to head out for a test paddle??? I start leave 7 June so any day after that should be good … weekdays are best for me since the wife works weekends but I can adjust… gimme a hoot…
