kayak fishing near edisto

I posted this in the inshore discussion before I realized that you guys had a kayak section on the forum…

I’ll be in edisto around the middle of march and looking for some areas to fish (fly fish) for reds - using my kayak.

any ideas and locations and flies would be appreciated… and if anyone is up for a trip then, let me know.

thanks,
Doug.

I’m in the same boat you’re in. I’d like to know too.

small clousers or flies that kinda hover or suspend should get some action. darker flies early in the a.m. look for the pushes.
i dont now many proper names of places, google earth can reveal lots

Edisto in the yak, nothing could be finer

thanks Scotty.

do you ever fish the channels or small rivers up through the salt marshes?

If it’s cool and the fish are still schooled up get ya a map and look for some skinny water mud flats next that’s close to deeper water access. If they have busted up, I’d hit the creeks and check out the typical structure areas, like docks, bars & cuts just make sure you’re in some bait, either way, if you can get on some bait, you’ll get some shorts. I’d throw something that would allow you to cover a lot of water like a spoon fly or maybe clouser until you get on fish, I’d then slow down and offer them some type of critter patter that has a little weight. I’ve have an assortment of Darks, Hots & Naturlas some with and some without flash. Let the fish tell ya what they want. If you’re own bait, then I’d throw something close to the size and color of the prevailing food options in the area. March and April can be a bit tricky, if you plan on using your yak then you need a couple of options to put in close to some area’s that can keep ya out of the blow. Check out the yak site and some of the older threads for a bone or two. I’d also talk to Mad Mike at the Angler as well as check out the fly shop that’s over around Beaufort. They are good people and should be able t get you close to some fish. They would also be a good source for what should be working around the time you will be fishing. Best of luck.
