I am new to the Charleston area and to kayak fishing. I live in West Ashley. Can anyone give me some ideas on fishing location and kayak tips?
Hey Chewy
I live in West Ashley too. Do you want to fish close to home or catch fish? If you want fish close to home, try launching from the south side of the Cosgrove Bridge and look for the mud flats. I’ve caught reds there. If you want to catch fish try Copahee Bay which is north of Mount Pleasant. Dee at Haddrell’s bait and tackle (573-3474) is real helpful. Watch out for the pluff mud if you get out of your yak and the tides which rise and fall 6 feet here.

Stinky Fingers, where exactly is “north”?
probably up the ICW towards IOP, Sullivan’s and Capers Island
I think he means:…get on 17 and when you hit New York you can stop.
just playin around…welcome to the area! you’re safe as long as you just don’t fish my spots.

Where is my mind?
Way out in the water, see it swimming…
Hey Chewy
To answer your question “where exactly is north?” it’s at zero on your compass
I’m not sure if that’s gonna help you with your quest, so here’s a previous posting of mine about Copahee.
From my 6 or 7 trips to Copahee, the best advice I can give you is to check it out at a rising low tide that way you won’t get stuck high and dry with a falling tide. There are lots of stories about people getting stuck there even in yaks. I get out of the shallow water (soon to be dry land) about 2 hours before the falling low tide hits dead low (with an average tide height that is) to make sure I don’t get stuck. Remember that the water can drop (or rise) about 1 inch ever 5 minutes or so here.
Another idea is go to the Copahee landing at low tide just to check the area out with binoculars to see what’s dry at low tide, look to the right of the landing. At low tide the creek out to the bay is firm enough to walk your kayak out to deeper water.
To find the Copahee Landing take I-526 to Hwy 17 over in Mount Pleasant, take Hwy. 17 north, you’ll see a large shopping center on the right called Town Center or something just past it is a right hand turn to IOP (Isle of Palms), stay on HWY 17 & go about 7 miles past the turn off for IOP and look for the Copahee Landing sign on your right, make that right on Gadsdenville Rd/Ave. which dead ends into the landing.
I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of spot tails in that area :).

If your trying to stay in west ashley, check out the stono at the end of wapoo Rd. by Edgewater at high tide. I fish there after work pretty often.
