I’m used to Fishing south Florida but will be coming into Charleston for a long weekend. I fish out of a kayak and usually limit myself to just shy of 3 miles offshore. Can anyone give me advice/tips on getting on some good fish? Locations, depths, etc. would all help. I prefer to catch some bait fish then do some trolling and topwater. I’ll be in town late April.
Hey Nev, I don’t know your kayaking experience of course…but 3 miles out, or even the harbor alone, can be pretty rough (plus currents) in a yak. Took a yak down to the keys last summer and did really well, but I didn’t come across any water that resembled our harbor or our nearshore waters. What are you trying to catch? Trolling? I suppose you could troll for Spanish out in the harbor around castle Pinkney/fort sumter…I think a kayak can be more of an asset in the creeks/rivers around here…lots of trout, reds, flounder that time of year for sure. If nothing else, it wont be near as rough to paddle around in the rivers compared to the harbor. That being said, if you were set on going nearshore, I’m not one to crush any dreams, I’ve done crazier things…but you could have a great day with a lot lower risk chasing reds and trout…let me know when you’re coming up and if I go out during that time maybe you can hop on board for an inshore trip.
In the summer you could probably find a king by trolling live bait less than a mile off the beach – it’s something that I really wanted to do last year but never got around to it.
