Can anyone recommend a specific brand/model for someone who tips the scales at 280 and is 6’3",me. I would like to use it to fish the creeks…

Wilderness Systems Ride 135
I’m around 225 and have had another person(around 180#) sit on the front of my x-factor. It has a 625# payload, so far it’s been great for me.
Yeah. Im with these guys. I have the Ride 135 and im 6’2" at 250 and I love it. I can go shallow and I can even stand up in it to site fish. You cant go wrong with this yak. Good luck on choosing!

The Malibu X-factor is definitely one to look at. In fact a lot of the Malibus have above average payload capacities.
The Jackson Big Tuna is sweet boat too.
Wilderness systems Ride 135 is fine too as others have mentioned.
My first true fishing Kayak was a Ride 135, was a bear to paddle. Before the Ride I was using a Prijon T-Canyon that I had bought back in 87 to fish out of. I’m a tad over 6 ft and close to 300 lbs and it worked well, don’t rule out the Hobie Pro Angler either.
I would love a Pro Angler 12 but they are so expensive. You gotta have a huge loan to just rig it up the way you want.
yeah PA 12 or 14 from what I have been reading. Try them before you buy them. Really put it through the stability test. Anchor, stand up, reposition like you would while you would be fishing, ohh and wear some swim wear…could be a wet day!
Dont hear many people falling off the PA, but like others have said $$$$. I have a ocean kayak prowler if you would like to fall I mean paddle it around. Pretty stable when on the water.
The “New” (2012 and up) Ride 135 has a 550 lb weight capacity, and is faster and shallow than my original 2006 Ride 135. The Native Redfish 14 could be a good choice, and has a sweet price tag. Jackson Big Tuna is an awesome boat, but it is a bit on the heavy side for one person to move around. I haven’t paddled or seen one yet, but the new Native Slayer looks like it is going to be a sweet boat too!
You need to get on the water and try some of these boats out. Every model has pros and cons, so figure out what is important to you, and then start narrowing it down!

I definitely agree with DD about trying them out. I am 6’ and tipping the scale at 320. So, I was skeptical about which models would really handle my weight. I went to Time Out Sports and rented a couple. I tried a Tarpon and Wilderness Ride 135 ( the last model not the current one). I found the longer slimmer ones helped me move faster, but if I wanted to move at all, fish, or reach down into the water then it was no good. Ended with a tipped over large guy. I then switched to the Ride 135 and it was much better. Gave me a lot more mobility both in the water and on the actual kayak. Now that I have practiced a little I can move around on the kayak and can stand in it. So, i love my Ride 135 but my best advice would be to go to Time Out rent some and see what you like. Also take someone with you so you can rent more than one. I took my wife so I could take more than one kayak out at a time and try them both back to back in the same settings. Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for the great ■■■■■■■■. It’s amazing how much you can learn on these forums. Perfect answers and discussion.

I have fished a PA 14 and it was like fishing on a jon boat… the most stable platform I have ever fished out of… well as far as kayaks go but if you can;t swing that price tag the ride is the next best option as far as I have fished…

I am your size well minus a couple inches of height and fish out of Jackson Cuda without any problems. First kayak I have used that I didnt have to put the scuppers in to keep the water out. Plenty of speed for our size.
You really need to test them before buying. Short of a PA standing isnt that easy in any yak for guys our weight. Lot of mass up high affecting the center of gravity. The ride is probably more forgiving when standing up than the cuda at our weight. It really boils down to what you are going to do 90% of the time in the kayak and which is more comfortable. Are you doing short trips to flats or are you doing all days trips fishing flats, creeks and inlets through all phases of a tide. The right Yak for me may not be the best for you there are trade offs on all models. Look for the one that best fits you needs.
Go see Dave at Time Out and demo em all.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I always recommend trying any kayak before you buy it, but the Pro Anglers are by far more stable than anything else on the market. I can WALK from front to back without it tipping. I have even had two people on the kayak at the same time. One was poling off the rear while I was throwing a 10’ cast net for mullet. I can fight large fish standing up and there is never a worry that the kayak is going to flip. As for something that is made for every size angler, the PA 14 can handle just about any size person. One of my best friends is 6’7 and over 300lbs and he stands, sits, and pedals in the PA 14 with no issues.
Every kayak has it pros and cons and not every kayak meets the requirements for each person. You should ask yourself three main questions before you make your purchase: What are my options for transporting my kayak? (roof rack, truck bed, trailer, etc) Where do I plan on using my kayak? (Rivers, lakes, costal waters, flats, etc) What best fits my budget?
For a person starting out it is often very difficult to imagine spending 1500+ dollars on kayak but the more you research about the models that are available on the market the more you will be able to understand what the extra cost provides. The main selling point for any of the Hobie fishing platforms is the pedal drive. It gives a person the ability to put the paddle down and the keep the fishing rod in their hands. It

DD Dave, does TimeOut rent the Pro Anglers, or just Wilderness and Cuda?
Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
I vote for the Malibu X-Factor. It has a 650 lb weight capacity and is massive. I have one and it is 14’ 4" long and 33" wide. It is very stable and easy to paddle.
I wouldn’t paddle a malibu kayak if it was given to me… I did once and it was the most uncomfortable kayak I ever fished from. My Pelican castaway was more fun to paddle and fish from… Of course that is just my opinion but pushy reps don’t do it for me either…
