I took my kayak gigging a.m. of July 5 in the Wando River. Worked well as always. I got two of the three flounder I spotted in the hour I was actually gigging and not paddling my behind off. Biggest one I got was 19 inches the other was about 16 inches. I went out alone and it was a challenge keeping the kayak parallel with the bank. It really helps when you have two people. The water was very clear last night.
A drift sock trailing 10 feet behind may help. Good luck.
I never thoought of using something like a drift sock. I did have two nice flounder behind it on a stringer that seemed to help once I had them on. The wind was the problem, when id stand up I was basically a sail. It would blow the kayak away from the bank I wanted to be on.
How do you do it w two people that makes it easier? I’ve never gigged but I could probably fit an outrigger on my yak (so i could stand) and manage it.
What kind of light do you use?
That sounds awesome. I have a Pro Angler that I have been threatening for a few months to rig with some lights and give it a try. I bought a drift sock for that reason but haven’t tried useing it yet. Somewhere I heard it’s not good to use them in shallow water. ???. Apparently they can get hung up on underwater structure since they sink somewhat. I don’t know though. And I haven’t really found anything very telling online either.
would think a drift sock would hang up on everything especially oysters. JMO…but what about two 10’ strands of chain. used to use them drifting for crappie. wouldn’t stop ya but def slow you down. maybe just 1 strand would work on a kayak…good luck
edit: Killer check your topic in swap shop. interested in the downriggers.
Its very easy to do in a kayak. Two people is the best but you have to take turn on who is gigging. Front person sits and steers with a paddle and back person pushes with the gig pole. Chains would screw you up big time theyd hang up in all the oysters and after thinking about it so would a drift sock. The light i use is a floatin fishin light. Theyre spotlights wrapped in styrofoam and theyre ten bucks at walmart. I use the battery from my boat and put it in a tackle bag behind my seat to keep it dry. Whoever said they get stuck in shallow water has probably never spent two minutes in a kayak. What else would be better in shallow water? A boat with a big outboard? Lol when it gets to shallow j ust push the way you camefrom or just get out and pull it into deeper water. Easy to fix that problem, no brainer.

I figured you were talking a tandem kayak. I don’t have one but I do already have a headlight mounted in styrofoam so it floats pointing down into the water. Do you mount that on a pole so it hangs out over or in front of the yak or just float it next to the yak?
And the rear guy has the gig? Doesn’t the yak spook the flounder by the time he gets to them?
hmmmmm. I’m thinking my maglite with the high output LEDs might work pretty well. Anyone else remember the old days when we would wade and carry a Coleman lantern?

Too Busy, old ways? That is still my M. O.
I am hesitant to comment on gigging. Some folks feel very strongly against it. For me it is tradition. I only get what I want to eat and I definitely don’t run a generator. I go out in the “creek” to get away from that kind of noise.
This thread has got me thinking. The Biyak will definitely be gigging before the summer is over.
I hook the light up to the battery thats in the storage compartment behind me. If im solo i stand in the middle seat and if i have a second person i stand in the back seat. My kayak is a sit on top w three seats in it. I hold the foam light in my left hand while i just search through the water with it and hold the gig pole in my right. The kayak doesnt spook the flounder because its so quiet. Once i spot one i just ease up to it gig it, try to get it directly under the kayak and then reach over until i feel the bottom of the flounder where the gig is sticking out. Once i find that spot on the fish i hold it on the gig, pull it in put it on the stringer and then knock it off the gig into the water. Its worked very well for me in the past. My best night so far was twelve flounder in about 3 hours.
Awesome to hear of another fellow kayak gigger. KillinR let me know if you ever want to go out together. I would love to have a partner in crime
