Kayak help

So I have borrowed a kayak for a bit while I am down on the Laguna Madre. My question is how long should it take to paddle a mile (or two) to get out to some islands and will my muscles burn afterwards. I’ve been paddling about a 1/3 of a mile every time I go deer hunt so I can do it, just wondering what price I might pay.

Ok so this is the easy way to figure it. The good: Sit in yak, Wind at your back, Tide going with you. The bad: SOT, Wind coming at you, tide going the opposite way as you. On a good day I paddled 21.4 miles in 5.5hrs. On a bad day I paddled 1 mile in 2 hours. It really depends on the conditions.

As far as your muscles go…stretch before, during and after.

I don’t know what it is, but kayaking has never really made my muscles sore. And of all the people I have taken out, they have never complained either. If you keep your back straight and use the foot rests, I don’t belief its a problem.

I’m going to side with Bill on this one. I don’t usually hurt, but every once in a while when doing battle with big wind and tide, I feel it the next day. 1 mile is no big deal in a yak. A 14 foot yak has a comfortable cruising speed of about 4 mph.

Tides really are not a concern since they will be around 1 to 1 1/2 ft. If the weather holds like forecasted, I will be paddling out against a 5-10 and back with the same. Luckily it’s over grass/sand bottom so I can get out and walk if I need to stretch.

Then yer set… The only time I really felt sore muscles was after paddling all day, 8 hours, against tide and kickin wind, other then that I’ll do several miles chasing reds and never feel it… My butt might go numb form time to time but arms and back are always fine… paddle away… ya feel tight, get out and wade a bit. You’ll be fine.
