kayak livewell

im trying to find a way to keep herring alive and frisky while fishing for striper on the river. the river water is pretty cold compared to what they are used to. any tips on how to get them acclimated beforehand or to keep them alive longer?

Here is a video of a livewell made out of a pet-food container…I’ve seen a bunch of these out there and they work:

I built one of these similar to what elgeebee tagged in his reply and am very happy with the results. The pet food container was purchased at Petsmart, pump from Walmart etc. Large enough to use effectively as either a bait tank or livewell and am able to adjust the water level that it holds. As it is removable, I just lift it out of my yak and into the bed of the truck for the ride home and my catch is still alive when I pull into the driveway.

We keep our hering in ice cold water up on the lake when striper fishing. It keeps them calm, and not running into the walls. When they hit the warmer water they perk right up.

Warm water will starve the oxygen and cause them to loose their scales quickly. Some people use medical oxygen as it is the best way to oxygenate the water, and it naturally cools the water. Me I use a filtered pump to recirculate and keep dumping ice in the tank.
