Was looking for a good place around Charleston to do some kayaking and camping. Was thinking about the Cape Romain Wildlife Refuge, but it appears they don’t allow camping on Bull Island. What would be a comperable place? Or is there access from the Francis Marion National Forest. I’ve fished the Cape Romain before many years ago with a guide, but would like to go back with my own kayak. Do any of the boat access only barrier islands have camping as well? Sorry for all the questions, but looking to get out and away for a weekend…literally!

You can camp on Capers Island which is state owned rather than federal and is the next island south of Bulls. Not a bad paddle from Isle of Palms marina. Have to call the state for a permit. Others on this site know more about this and hopefully they will chime in.

Cool, thanks, I’ll look into these too. I know there’s Hunting Island down near Beaufort and Huntington Beach to the north, but I was looking for a little more isolation. thanks
You used to be able to camp on Cedar Island and Murphy Island just above Cape Romain. I don’t know if the rules have changed for those islands. You can ride the South Santee down to either one.
There’s also Otter Island off of Edisto. Pretty sure you’d need permits for any of these but I don’t remember them as hard to get.
Had someone mention an island off of the Stono for a good place to camp … not sure of the location but figured you could Google Map it
