We’ve launched at Sunset Park…I don’t know about any night restrictions.
You’ll definitely need a cart. Also you might have problems doing this launch solo - there are rocks to climb down between the grassy area and the water. The further you go out from the rocks, the softer it gets. Launching and landing at low tide is a muddy experience. I cut the hell out of my foot on an oyster shell last time I was there, when my shoe got stuck in the mud and I didn’t watch where I planted my bare foot.
Is there an easy way to get a yak down off The Battery? I’ve paddled down from a long ways up before… would be nice to carry a yak down some steps to the little beachy area

A small kayak launch dock would be nice down there. Of course then you’d have to run off the crabbers, fishermen sightseers.

Sunset park closes at dusk. Gates close. That said, you don;t have to launch in the muddy area. Launch off the sandy beach. Once you are in the parking lot, walk 50 feet toward the water and hang a right down the stairs. Most of that beach is sand/gravel/shells and it much easier to walk through then the other beach that is mostly mud. Alternatively, you can walk your kayak down to the floating dock, but that’s a haul and it would be tough to get in and out of the kayak.
If you are trying to gig at night, I can’t think of any locations where you can launch or return at night on the north side of James Island. Fort Johnson gate closes around 5pm and Sunset closes at dusk. Closest launch available at night in that area would be on the Wappoo.
Thanks yal!! I went out there last night. Beautiful night time kayak with the charleston lights!! If you fish for Spottail you should hit that area up and call me so you can teach me how to catch the salt water fishes!! Great structure. Water was vary clear then would go muddy then vary clear and so on. One spot seems to have a oil slick
Saw a couple small flounder. nothing worth gigging. Might be easier to gig on a low tide. I couldnt walk on the rocks with out slipping. But (**() it looks fishy!!!
Yall know of any other places that I could launch a kayak and get to some potential gigging sandbars.(Have to be able to walk)(So anything but pluff mud is fine, sand bars prefered) Near inlets or creek openings are awesome. And any suggestions would be amazing!!
We need to start a topic called kayak boat launches or something
I wanted to go out on folly. But the public landing is too far of a kayak to the southern point sandbars. I have lights run down my boat and its like paddling a barge it seems
So close to flounder but so far away…
Launch at sunset cay on folly if you want to that way towards bird key. Its on 8th block west. If you want to go behind morris theres a place to launch on 15th or 16th, by the washout and across from the salt pond, just watch the low tide.
where’d you launch from? if it was sunset, did you have any problems after dark?

This is how I have been finding places to launch from.
