Kayak recommendations

Looking to purchase my first kayak for fishing. Looking at Ocean Kayak Scupper and considering the new Perception Bimini 15.0 … interested in opinions, recommendations, problems, etc. from more experienced kayakers. Yes, all comments good and bad welcome.

I am no expert but I can tell you this. If you are looking for speed & ease to paddle against the tide go with a narrow kayak. If you want stability and some space go with the wider kayak.

I have a necke 225 pd cap. It is narrow & light. Have a friend that has a much more stable kayak with lots of room. When I paddle up a creek on an outgoing tide, they cannot follow me, the effort for a wide body kayak to paddle upstream makes that task a poor return on the effort. It’s a trade off. I use mine only in the warmer months. If I tip, it’s not the end of the world, but I can go just about anywhere.

My advise is to try out several. Call Blackwater Adventures in Pinopolis SC and make an appointment. He will meet you somewhere around the water and let you try out several.

I bought a pungo14 about 3 weeks ago. It seemed like a decent compromise to me. You can’t stand while wizz’in, but it cuts the water alright. Plenty of room, low price, seat is nice. The style does not compare to the skinny ones, but it’s no canoe either.

the tribalance is the best of both worlds it has a narrow hull and is very fast.the boat also has outriggers that make it totally stable.i have been flyfishing out of kayaks for five years .before moving to south carolina i ran a shop that specialized in saltwater flyfishing and kayaks for fishing.ihad the oppurtunity to fish out of several waldens, ocean kayaks, wilderness system and the tribalance.for all around prefomance the tribalance was the best.following the tribalance i liked the pungo and then the drifter by ocean kayak.if you want to try my tribalance get in touch with me .bakesflies@yahoo.com
