Kayak Rods

I am new to the list, and kayak fishing…what types of rods are you guys using with your kayaks? i have a Heritage 14.5 Solo/Tandem fishing kayak and am looking to get out around the estuaries of the Broad River. I need to outfit myself with a good kayak rod now. I am trying to determine which type of rod will work best in the kayak.

Thanks

Don’t recreate what works for you. I fish with primarily what I fished with before I got in a Kayak. I’ve sawed off the butt end of a rod or 2 but be true to self. You can make what you’re accustom to work in a Yak. Don’t buy into the “kayak rod” BS. They’re just trying to suck in people. Get in a kayak do some fishing & see what mods need to be made.

I say we fish 5 days & work 2

I’m a friend of the “Ugly Stik” when it comes to kayaking. Usually a 6’ 1/2" to a 7’ rod. The longer the the rod, the longer the leader…that is when fished under a float.

dscottmdo,
Asking most guys what rods are best is like asking what yak is best, most people have an opinion, doesn’t make it right.
I have some of the cheapest rod/reel combos ever made. Having good line, sharp hooks (I use braided line and circle hooks), and the right set-up helps overcome any equipment deficiencies you may think you have. I’ve enjoyed of the best fishing of my life with my son out on the yak, with inexpensive gear.
Use what works for you, and by all means enjoy it with friends whenever possible.
Also, there is a wealth of knowledge here at the CF forum, don’t be afraid of asking the questions.

welcome to the kayak world of fishing i fish in the waterree river over by camden , all i will tell you about kayak fishing DO NOT fish with more than 14 lb line it is hard as hell to get un snaged it will tip you over before it brakes

I like cheap rods and cheap reels while in my kayak. Why? Because they will eventuually get dropped into the water. I haven’t lost any yet, but they all have been submerged into the saltwater. Saltwater will freeze up a reel in a week.

I’m a big fan of the Ugly Sticks 6’6" to 7" with Shimano Sienna 4000 reels with stern mounted drags, currently I load them with 10 pound Power Pro braided line but I’ll be moving up to 15 or 20 pounds next time I respool them.

I would add a slight change to this comment… Cheap reels freeze up after a week. If you spen the extra money to buy a good reel thats properly built for salt water they last longer. In order not to loose them, invest in some gear lanyards, they’re cheap and they will keep you from loosing your stuff.

A good buy is the Shimano Spheros reels… they’re about 80 bucks, but they have a waterproof drag as well as stainless bearings… Ive had mine in the yak for over 2 years now and not one problem… its mounted on a 7’4" Gloomis Bronzeback rod… I havn’t lost that either… meanwhile my buddy just lost his rod off of his actioncraft.

The point is, if your carful and plan things out you dont lose your gear. and if you invest a little into the reels the saltwater doesnt lock them up.

Just my .02

It appears that we have the same boat…

Thanks for the info.
