Has anyone ever used such a device? Sure would save you a lot of paddling time, at least going down wind. Kind of pricey. Might be fun to figure out a way to make your own.

That’s a lot of money for an umbrella.
I made a simple Marconi sail for my yak a couple of years ago. Downwind was great. Quartering winds were pretty good. Tacking to work upwind was tough. One problem in my yak was no good centerboard, so I had to use my paddle blade as a lee board. Suppose I could have fashioned a set of removable lee boards, but I was more interested in fishing than sailing.
Hobie mirage yaks sail pretty well. The turbo fins make a nice centerboard.

I own a hobie adventurer. I got the hobie sail recently, and in fact I plan to sail it on Saturday in Charleston Harbor. I’ll let you know how it does, so long as I don’t get swept out to sea. LOL
