I’m setting my kayak up to be able to stand and gig. I just made my stabilizers. I have it set up to come directly off the kayak or extended six inches or for extra safety nights I have a 6 foot insert for gaurenteed no flipping. They have pins so I can twist and lock into a variety of positions. One is parallel to the yak another is flared out to give a wider extra support stand. I can then twist to a fully upright position for no drag.
Supplies. ALL 3/4 inch pvc. Need 2 45 degree angle elbows. 2 90 degree elbows. 2 ten foot pvc 3/4 inch pipe as well. 4 pins. Two Ubolts (in the For PVC or copper pipe section of lowes in mnt p) (1 to 3 noodles from Walmart in mnt p also.) PVC plumber glue. Zip ties. Cut noodles in half. PVC links as long as desired.
I will test the set up out tomorrow. If I don’t get enough buoyancy. I will add two more half noodles to each side. Triangle form with the point beig the original as seen and two sitting above it. Hope to limit drag when in the down position and floats come into contact on a “add needed basis” ha. Will up date tomorrow.
It want let me upload. I will try on my computer later. Will build someone a setup and brig a mess of flounder for tips on a flounder gigging hotspot. New to charleston. But can trade a good upper coast gigging spot ha.
shoot me some pictures of your set up. Here is mine,
The arms are a little long so I will shorten them before I try them again. All in all they worked pretty good. I hope to get out and gig this year from my kayak, what kind of light set up will you use?
I’ve ordered two sets of the lights on the link below. I have a 30 day return policy and a gentleman just said he would help me build one way brighter leds… So I am hoping he is serious and I might send them back or something. Or do both ha. Never can have to much light in my humble opinion. Ha
I gigged a lot in the cherry grove to Pawleys island area my whole life. New to charleston area so im looking forward to explore hear. I’m also adjusting my set up to take advantage missing opportunities in the deeper water and pluff mud where I can’t wade and gig. . Added plus is that I like my boat staying right side up when I’m playing in the ocean. It’s a comfort thing
Anyone else have trouble loading pictures on to here from their phone or a IPhone in particular?
Here is the almost final product. Just tried it out late last night to to check it to see how standing felt. I can pole well. I can even paddle with the gig and do some really tight turns standing up the whole time. Sorry I don’t have a pic with the lights on. I have not even been able to see that either. But have 2 flounderpro 2000 24 inch on each side with them running parallel at the bottom of the yak.
Only draw back. Stabilizers take a second to kick in. I think it’s the give in the PVC. Have enough extra pvc to out the support in the middle of the floats as the gentleman above but also ad a triangle of connections between all three floats. I think this will then be no issue at all.
