Kayak Storage and Squirrels

Need some advice as we have a couple of Yaks coming soon.

Gonna take alot of work to store in shop where I would prefer.

With that said, I have an outside metal shed that seems to be the best, other than the squirrel concern, as it is open on the front. Thinking of the J-hooks keeping bottom about 4’ from ground, but hey, they can get anywhere if they want.

Thanks for thoughts on this.

I have an area under my house that is about 10x24 with a concrete floor. I made a rack that is bolted to the wall (foundation) and has simple 90 degree “arms” (2x4’s) that mine sit on. If squirrels are a problem, you may try wrapping them with a tarp and some bungee cords. I prefer to shoot them and cull out the herd. I have been told that mothballs keep them away but don’t know that for sure.

I’m on number 11 for the week and the wife sent me a pic yesterday of another 7 under the front yard oak tree… As soon as you kill out a group another one takes it’s place. I’ve been fighting squirrels for 25 years around my place.

Not sure how true this is, but I’m gonna give it a try. I was recently told that if you can trap a couple of fox squirrels and have them take residence around your property they will keep the cat squirrels away as they are territorial. Was told to leave them caged for a few days and after releasing make sure they have a good food supply. Now as to trapping a fox squirrel I’ve got an edge on a very good source, but for most I’d imagine it would be a bit challenging.

This, but have decided to go with DIY method as it is El Cheapo and perfect for this. Have someone with a hydraulic bender that is gonna make the curves perfect out of some conduit. gonna go ahead and mount on wall in closed shop, so no squirrels to worry about.

It’s two yaks so down wall about 16", then 45 down then upsweep about 8". Will be foam covered to pad. Wanna keep pressure as equal as I can…they will each be on their own rack, not stacked. Jackson Coosa HD’s.

I never had a squirrel problem when I had cats.

Cats could never be an option for me. Me and the dogs dislike them.

I have 20-something pecan trees in the yard and there’s just no reasonable way to cull the squirrel population so I don’t even try. My shop is enclosed except for the soffit. Squirrels, rats, and all manner of creatures enter through that opening and find somewhere to nest - until I find and destroy them. I hang my kayak from J-hooks that I put in the exposed bottom chord of the roof truss. Never had a problem with them getting in there - yet.

Take a look at these Jokers, Fred…

Guys, you can indeed get rid of these squirrels. First step is investing in a small game trap. Litter the yard with peanuts and put a better stash in the trap. Be persistent about setting the trap everyday, and figure on popping off a squirrel every day after work (point blank with a BB gun). After catching about a half dozen, you’ll get one associated with a nearby nest to your house. The other squirrels will get the message of danger when they figure out their loved ones have been killed and they will relocate. The generation of slain squirrels won’t return and you can count on several years without a squirrel problem at least. You will still see them but they won’t be setting up shop in your yard. Slain squirrell bodies along one of their routes, near a fence line etc will also help send the message.

I had a skunk move in my kayak last winter.( hanging on the wall in my boat shed) Had to catch him and put him to sleep with exaust gas

My mother put moth balls in attic to keep them out…might work in kayak?
