Kayak

I am looking for a kayak that I can take in the ocean, that is self-bailing, and that I can stand up in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out the Ride 135 from Wilderness Systems. Really easy to stand in, and being a sit on top it is perfect for punching out through the waves. There are some boats that might paddle and surf a little better, but you will be hard pressed to find one that paddles as well as the ride AND is truly stable enough to stand in.

We do have some rides available for rent at Time Out if you are interested in trying one out.

How much are these boats? Are there any used ones available? How well are they equipped to fish?

New, unrigged for fishing, they sell for $899. There are always some used ones out there, you just have to find them! As far as equipping them to fish, it depends on how well you want to equip it. Rod holders can be as cheap as $10, or as much as $50, depending on what you are looking for.

I’ll second the Ride 135 for an ocean going standup platform. It’s the go to yak in my guide service. I put clients in the Ride >90% of the time and they feel comfortable in the boat in a matter of minutes. Several have been standing up drift fishing or sight casting to reds within 30 minutes of getting on the boat.

New - Go see Dave at Time Out Sports
Used - watch the classifieds on kayak fishing forums and Craigslist. You will probably find a 2-3 year old Ride with rod holders and an anchor trolley for about $600

Lets not forget the Hobie Pro Angler. Handles the surf well and easy to stand in. Just make sure you keep the front hatch closed.

I am with S1tpilot on this one. They are more expensive but you pay for what you get. You can do jumping jacks on the thing wihtout flipping it. Tackle storage is the most on the market. I have logged well over 500 hours in them this year and if you are not standing the seat is one of the best on the market as well.
