This past weekend’s incident should serve as a reminder that we need to go over our gear and habits to make sure we’re ready for these situations.
Please wear your PFD. If you have one that you hate to wear, go buy one that suits you better. Dress to swim, rig to flip. Let someone know where you are going/when to expect you back. If conditions don’t look safe - don’t go out.
Yeah, certainly not criticizing these young men but, I was in Charleston Saturday. It was really windy and I can’t imagine kayaking out in open water with winds like that. I know when you’re young you feel invincible, I know I did. I pointed this story out to my 19 year old so hopefully he and others can learn from tragic stories like this.

Agreed - I’ve made some mistakes out there on the water when first getting into kayak fishing. All we can do is hope it opens up some eyes and makes folks think twice before hitting the water. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing young man.

I was on the beach at the light house inlet and it really wasn’t windy or rough when I was out there but conditions change quick. I was there from 1-4:30 walking my dogs and there was a group of people with 2 kayaks playing in the surf it was calm and flat with little wind and from what I could tell they seemed new to yakking, they where one groin over from the inlet, its quiet possibly it could of been them. When I read the story I was really surprised because the conditions seemed mild when I was out there but you can’t see rip currents and the outer bar could produces strong waves and currents that could easily toss you. It is sad to hear and definitely weighed heavy on my mind because we yak baits out at night often in the inlets and it is always rougher than what I saw Saturday, but we where live vest and glow sticks for safety.
