Kayaking bait on Sullivans

I asked one of my buddies who works in the Mount P. area for DNR and he said there is nothing illegal about it… the only issue would be in no shark fishing areas like Folly and up there around Myrtle Beach

The only 2 places you can’t shark fish are Hilton Head and Horry County. You can’t shark fish off the piers, and while you can on the beach, good luck during daytime hours with 1000 surfers all crossing your lines and every tourist in the world walking into them. It honestly is more hassle than its worth out on folly unless you fish after 3-4pm.

dont forget kiteboarders, paddleboarders, and windboarders! i can be the 1st on sullivans and where does the 1st paddleboarder put in with miles of beach open? why within 20 feet of my/our lines of course. ive also had swimmers ask where my lines were and i was suprised they were trying to be courteous. WRONG!!! she swam right towards it and got it wrapped around her arm 50 yards out. i also had a smart @$$ conversation with someone else on how id love to see a windsurfer with a bullseye on the sail to cast at and wadda ya know although i never actually launched a weight at him that very day i found one! especially if you go on a windy day the kiteboarders almost blot out the sun.

Oh lord… the kite boarders are the worst… I have had plenty of run-ins with them, and they all have the same sour attitude. Thats why I have switched almost exclusively to Botany Bay… You have the beach almost entirely to yourself, great scenery, and great fishing. A lot of REALLY big stingray though…

Back in the early 80’s when my club started sharkin off the beaches here in SC we had a guy from DNR do research for us on the regulations state wide. At that time only Horry Co. and Pawleys Is. had any regs against it. I’m sure some other places have enacted some local ordinances, but as a LE officer myself, I can tell you that if it is not an ordinance or law, there is nothing ANYONE can do officially to stop you. Bear in mind some places on the Atlantic coast have vague ordinances such as “dangerous” activity which could be construed by officials to mean just about anything, so be careful.
Over the years we’ve heard it all from idiots and even been told to leave the beach by a state park ranger. In every case, we have been right and had it sorted out accordingly. Ofcourse, you do need to exercise common sense and courtesy. The absence of both was a great help in getting sharking from shore banned in Horry Co. in the first place. In addition, there is a law on the books that makes it illegal to interfere or damage your fishing gear/line whle you are legally fishing. Can’t remember the code right off the top of my head , but I used to carry a copy in my tackle sack while on the beach.

Here is the law referenced by blueline. Scroll down to Section 50-5-105. http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t50c005.php
