never wnted to think about it but the cold water/ weather is going to come soon and i just wanted to be prepared for it.
I have a freedom hawk kayak, and usually paddle back to hamlin sound to catch the reds schooling up. What do yall wear when you kayak in the winter…i am looking for something resonable (around $200) to keep me warm on the paddles there. My kayak is very stable and almost impossible for me to flip, so no need to worry about flipping. Do yall just bundle up with a bunch of jackets, get a wetsuit, or what?
thanks for the advice yall.
Poly Pro long johns, waders and a PFD… layers on top wiht a good waterproof jacket. When the water gets cold WEAR YOUR PFD… it will save your life if ya go over. I fish about the same area and the water isn;t deep but it still gets cold. A lot of people think you will drown wearing waders… yes you will in a river or stream wiht a flowing hard current… in our area they will hold water but not sink you. it’s gonna be a beetch to get out of the water wit waders full of water but as long as you have your PFD and don’t panic you should be OK. I also take a dry bag wiht a complete set of dry warm clothes in case I need to change. There are plenty of shallow areas and oysterbars you can crawl up on to change if ya need to. Wool is also a great way to go, keeps ya warm even when wet, it’s just scratchy. Gimme a hoot this winter and we’ll meet up and fish… I been dying to hit Hamlin Sound just can’t find a good place to launch without the stink eye or the cops hassling me about parking the jeep…
You always need to worry about flipping. The folks who don’t worry and don’t practice deep water re-entry too often become sad stories in the news.
gearing up - I’ll be doing an article for a November magazine with too many details. The short list is pretty simple
Wool or poly pro / poly fleece long johns
good fitting neoprene chest waders with a wading belt. The belt will keep most of the water out. Here is the Jim Sammons video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYwG52p4yjs
PFD - ALWAYS - nuff said
Waterproof jacket
Gloves
Hat or balaclava if it’s really chilly
If you search craigslist long enough you can find a deal on a wetsuit. That coupled with splash pants, PFD, and splash jacket is a great choice.
Never launch without a dry bag with a change of clothes, towel and a space blanket
The key is to dress for the water temp, not the air temp.
spend a little time on youtube and watch the cold water survival school videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aowQ9bthgBQ
Never venture out on cold water without your PFD
ok thanks for the advice…do yall prefer a certain type of waders or anything? nikonjedi…i will give u a call once the reds start schooling up and maybe you me and dontpanic can head out to hamlin in yaks
thanks for the videos toobusy
