Kayaking to the Jetties...

First off let me say that this trip was pretty rough, complete with strong currents, thick chop, rogue waves, lost gear, and a shark attack… ok well no shark attack. But seriously don’t attempt this trip unless you feel good about your paddling abilities and stamina and the conditions and tides are favorable, even then use extreme caution.

Been wanting to paddle out there for some time now, the winds died down yesterday, well sort of, and lowtide was at 6:30pm. Put in at Ft. Moultrie around 4:45, and after an hour paddling through some rough waters, we made it to the North Jetty. Then paddled a good ways out to the ‘grillage’ or shark hole, whatever you call it, and bottom fished with shrimp and fiddlers. Not a bite in the channel, so we paddled around to the back side, trolled grubs and picked up a few blues.

The paddle back was interesting. The tide had turned by then, but the south winds were still blowing pretty hard and the chop was steep and bumpy. Thought I was clear of the main sand bar and offshore breakers when a rogue wave lurched up and took me for a ride. Surfed it for a second but got turned sideways and went for a swim. Lost a some bait, a bottom rig, and a beer.:sunglasses: Everything else was strapped down or in dry bags. A little intense capsizing a mile offshore, but no harm done.

Made it back to the Fort around 8pm, just in time for the sunset. Dont let the pictures fool you, the currents and wind were really bad at times. But definitely a great paddle if your up to it.

We were definitely worn out after that trip, and soaked to the bone… no chance of keeping your as- dry out there. Not us surf fishing, but here’s the money shot… awesome sunset.

Awesome sunset shot! Perhaps one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Mad Mike and I have been talking about making that trip but launching from the beach right where it looks like you beached. I have a good feeling about flounder around those rocks fishing on the bottom.

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching
