Kayaks and Power Boat Rules

Are there any rules concerning speed or distance power boats must maintain around kayaks and paddleboards? They are everywhere now with inexperienced operators. I spent an extra 30 minutes traveling James Island Creek on Saturday to get home from the boat landing due to slowing down for them. There were groups of 8 to 16 and lots of onesies and twosies. They are in a creek well over 100 feet and up to 300 wide and 10 to 20 feet deep so they could boat out of direct traffic for their own safety. This must be becoming a nightmare for you guides out there. What do you do?

1/4 throttle with bow pointed to the sky as you pass will narrow down the paddleboarders. Then, spin around and pick up any hot chicks that fell off…:imp:

Just kidding of course, but there are waaay too many and should not be clogging up the waterway.

I kayak and here are my $0.02. First, I try and stick to the sides of the creeks, away from boat traffic, and encourage those I am with to do the same. It’s polite and a lot more safe. Second, kayakers probably “should” stop paddling when a boat comes by, to allow the boat to pass sooner. A fast paddle can be almost as fast as a boat at idle speed. Third, I’d prefer you blast by on plane and create less wake, than puttering on by.

The 1/4 speed throttle works for me if it’s too dang hot and I want to cool off!

You’re responcible for you wake. What exactly that means no one knows for sure

Be considerate of everyone else on the water, and expect them to do the same for you.
