I just wanted to remind everyone that as the temps start to rise don’t forget to drink plenty of water while you’re “out on the water”!! I had a very upsetting experience today that drove that message home. I talked my neighbor and good friend into fishing with me today. We were on the water by 7am heading for my favorite redfish spot in Wadmalaw sound. We didn’t have any luck, except for a couple of stingrays and one flounder. As we were running from spot to spot on the way home, my neighbor started complaining about his stomach bothering him. He told me that he really needed to “relieve” himself. As I was pulling up to one of the islands on the Stono, my neighbor passed out! I had to pour cold water over his head and give him some bottled water to drink to get him to come around! After a couple of minutes of getting him to drink some water and me going WOT back down the river he finally started to gain his senses. I got him back to the dock as quickly as I could and got him home. Lesson to be learned…drink plenty of water during these hot days of spring/summer, especially while we’re sitting out on the water!!!
I have a problem with arrythmia that goes NUTS when I get dehydrated.
Keep the fluids going in guys and girls cause it’s serious business.

Good quality moisture wicking clothing is also a good investment. They can be expensive, but if you look around for deals, especially last year’s style you can usually find shirts in the $20-30 range. Academy Sports carries Magellan clothing. I especially like the pants which are quick drying nylon, have zip off legs, and lots of pockets for $20. I know wear long sleeves and pants all year round and have noticed I feel better at the end of the day keeping the sun off my skin and staying dryer. A wide brim hat is also a good investment to keep the sun off your face and neck.

Pedialyte is a godsend in the heat. Great for hydrating during a long night on the bottle, as well! ;D
More good advice. Water not beer. Beer maybe nice to drink but has no hydration value. Spent many days in the hot as hell desert and seen the best men drop from dehydration. Lets all be smart and have a good summer.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
Glad you were able to help your neighbor Sea Tonic…Scary stuff right there…

folks need to remember that its very easy to overdo–even when we feel like we arent doing much when its hot. Medications such as blood pressure meds, diuretics , antihistimines and a few others can increase this risk. Many medications also cause “sun-sensitivity” Alcohol should be drank “in moderation” as well as drinks with caffeine. if your boat doesnt have a t-top or bimini top…now laugh if you want to…keep a large beach towel or umbrella for emergency shade for someone suffering from heat exhaustion. drink water and more water…if you notice your urine looks darker and smells very strong…take heed of this as a potential warning sign. Wear loose clothing, and if someone is suffering form heat stroke remove or loosen clothing(within reason :0 ) Dry hot skin…headaches, chills, shortness of breath, increased heart rate, blurred vision…listen to your body! sit down, find some shade, hydrate, seek medical attention as soon as possible!
A few good things to have in your boat in the summer…a clean towel for wetting and placing on someones neck and head who may be suffering from heat exhaustion, ziplock bags…ice from your cooler in these placed to the neck, arm pits and groin area will help cool someones elevated body temp from heat exhaustion , a source for shade. A phone to call for help if needed.
be safe and smart out there folks…dont want to lose any of ya:smiley:

I caught myself Saturday, I had a killer headache going and my pee was super dark… I made myself stop, wrap cooler soaked towel around my head, drank lots and lots of water and some bc powder. Took me a little while but I did start to feel better and was able to get back to fishing. And its only May…

B ecareful with the BC and Goody powders. They are loaded with caffeine, which can make matters worse. I love them, but this past football season they almost got the better of me with the blood pressure thing. I used to call it the breakfast of champions- 2 BCs and two Diet Cokes would take care of the worst early morning problems. Unfortunately when you take 4 more during the day they can lead to some issues. I think what you do the night before is the biggest issue. Once in college we went out on the Silver Dolphin, which should have been put out of business for false advertisement. The mate had just gooten in from a night out, by 10 AM he was having some real problems. I felt bad for him at first until I had to untangle my own mess from sharks as we were fishing the “Gulf Stream”
Regarding Penny’s advice. When I’m out on the yak, I make it a point to relieve mysef into empty gatorade bottles. That way I can keep up with both color and volume. The advice from my doctor was “Drink more than you think you need to.”

The secret to being properly hydrated is to start drinking before you go out. Once you start getting those bad feelings from being dehydrated, it is about too late.
