So I have finally found the menhaden this season. Took some searching to finally do it but I found them!!! I threw in one cast net and pulled about 30-40 of them. So much that I threw some back. So heres the problem now. I cant seem to keep them alive long enough to fish with. Its a little bit of a ride back to my fishing spot and I heard that they die quick but the 20 minute ride shouldnt kill them. I dont have an aerator in my live well but I hit the button to put fresh water in every now and then. Any ideas on how to keep these fish alive so that I can feed them to the bigger fish?
Most livewells continuously put water in the well. When you say, “hit the button every now and then”, that’s a red flag… Basically these guys live best in a round bait well with lot’s of water flow (current). Even then, they are fragile. Also, you don’t want to overload them, and take the dying ones out.
yeah, what he said…your pump should be running the whole time, and it should be full and running before you throw the cast net. they also do better in a round tank rather than something that is squarish.
If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.
One bait per gallon on bigger bait at best. If I had a 30gallon tank or smaller I wouldn’t put more then 20 in it. 20 good bait are better then 30 ugly bait and much better then 50 dead bait.
