keeping bilge mildew free

my grandfather told me he used to keep a 110v light bulb in his boat bilge that he would plug in when he was at the dock. theory was it would create just little heat and keep the air moving in the bilge to help keep it dry

what are your thoughts, im thinkin about doing this in my bilge and under the center console

Let us know if it works, it might be worth a try!

If nothing else it will be easier to see when you check on things…

Safest and cheapest option is to try and find a way to create more natural air flow. If you can vent more air by maybe leaving a hatch slightly open or some other port that allows more air to pass through.

Another old trick is plain old white vinegar. Buy the cheap stuff in a gallon bottle, put it in a spray bottle, cut it with plain water, and mist the solution in areas of your bilge that are prone to mildew. It’s an excellent cleaner and it will kill mold spores before they have a chance to grow. You can brush, wipe, scrub, etc. with it to clean things up or you can just mist it on and let it dry. It’s also a natural deodorizer so it will keep things fresh and clean smelling.

Only downside is the smell. Some folks don’t agree with it.

Dang, I forgot about viniger, my dad usta use it years ago.
