With so many fished being weighed in alive these days, I would like to join in.
I understand the concept and all of a striper tube and thinking about building one for the boat. What are good dimensions to go by. If I built one I was thinking of a 3 compartment type deal. Maybe each chamber being 14"x14" and whole thing being about 30-36" tall. All compartments would share the same water but each would have its own pump. Or is that over kill having 3 pumps? Trying not to over think this too much.
Or since I recently picked up a 50gal tank is it easier just to use that. Does it affect the bait in there the rest of the day if you put the fish in there in the early morning.
It would probably be easier to put an ad for stiper tubes wanted on the Striper Board or call Warren Turner and see what he has … Three chambers would be overkill…You can double up smaller fish in one tube just fine. If you find some tubes that have the venturi aeration, I would remove it because it puts too much air in the fish… My tubes have an 1100 gph pump in each tube which is the size they came with originally. I add salt, baitsaver at the start of the day…ice occasionally when its warmer, some foam off may be necessary but rarely needed…I also have an insulating jacket around my tubes that keeps them cooler… Do not overfill the striper tubes with water. 11 gallons is all that is needed…I have a single battery dedicated to running the striper tubes all day…Good luck and I will be glad to assist you any way that I can…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
Yeah would be easier to just get a tube from Warren Turner. It’s getting the time of year where it’s gonna be real difficult to keep fish alive on warm days. Adding non-chlorinated ice helps. If we ever want to see Murray be a “big fish” lake we gotta start letting the big ones go. Hartwell is a good example of where catch and release works. Most of the ASC teams use striper tubes and you simply can not beat Hartwell for 20lb class fish. Hartwell will flat out spoil you with big fish. I’m gonna start using my tube during MSC tournaments. If I can mount a tube on a bass boat they can be mounted on any boat! Lol. I also support everyone’s right to keep some fish for the freezer but we also gotta be good stewards of the lake if we want to see better #'s of big fish in Murray. In the last month there have been a lot of nice fish taken from the lake and it takes years to replace them. Maybe the club could award bonus points for live fish and/or reduce the creel???
Buying 2 from Rick K this week. So my problem is solved. Thanks again Rick and I will be getting up with you tomorrow or thurs at the very latest.
To be honest Bryan, seeing that big fish living in the livewell that day and that look on your face when i said i was going to put it on the wall kinda still sticks with me. I guess its cause I had never been in that position before or even held a fish like that. I told the wife it would be the last real one to go on the wall.
I am not gonna lie I have done my share of cooler stuffing, but the other day I even told my fishing buddies that if we are meat fishing any 10#+ fish would be going back if we are on my boat. Kinda got some weird looks…lol…but if we all can do just a little, it might just make a small difference.
Chip I support your decision to mount that fish. All of us fishermen pay for those fish in the lake so we can do with them what we choose to. I like a freezer full of striper as much as anyone else. If we want big fish in the lake like Hartwell more of those fish gotta be turned back to fight another day and SCE&G has to do their part to not cause another big fish kill.
I think using the striper tubes gives me bonus points any way. If a fish loses weight when it dies, then I get a bonus for every fish I keep alive. Our new scales are capable of weighing fish to .01 pounds so hopefully keeping 4 fish alive will make a significant difference throughout the year. The practice of weighing live fish in tournaments did not begin as a conservation measure. It began as a competitive advantage. It just happened to also have conservation aspects that bodes well for the sport.

I don’t think you can blame SCE&G for the phosphorous levels in the lake though they can manage the times and locations from where they take water from the lake and how often the lake is drawn down in the winter to kill plants and to foster nutrient scouring of organic and inorganic sediments. We can remove more phosphorous from the wastewater treatment plant discharges that go into the lake but the upgrades that are needed to improve the discharges are expensive. We also have to reduce the use of products that contain phosphorous even though the alternatives will likely be more expensive and less effective. People should learn to use less fertilizers and wash their cars at carwashes that contain and recycle the washwater instead of doing it at home and letting the rinsewater run-off to the storm drain. Did you know that hogs can be genetically modified to so that their bodies absorb more phosphorous and the hog manure contains much less? This would help hog farmers reduce the nutrient loading from hog farms but I don’t know what would happen after we ate the hogs… The EPA considers agriculture to be the most widespread source of impairment in the nations assessed lake acres.

I learned that lesson a few years ago at the Turkey Bowl. I stood on the dock holding my fish by the lip waiting to get weighed. I weighed him after about 10 minutes and he was dry. Lee brought his up in a cooler full of ice water and beat me by .1 lbs
