i normally just put dinner on ice and fillet it when i get home. my question is do you kill your fish prior to putting it in the cooler or just let the ice do it?
#RELEASE2018SC
Edit: Really didn’t mean this to be a smartass comment but on reflection it sure looks that way. Thanks for supporting the cause, there is no law against keeping one its just a suggestion. My wife has already threatened me for not bringing her a fish - so far I’m fighting the good fight

just so you know, i have pledged to #RELEASE2018SC and have released the 30+ trout i have caught this year. i am also enrolled in the tag and release program through SCDNR. i also donate to CCA and the CPR initiative however, if i didn’t bring home a red every once and awhile my wife would not let me fish!

To answer your question, throw it in the cooler. Maybe a knife would be more humane, I dont know.
If I keep fish for dinner, I put them in a cooler with ice and saltwater and clean/fillet them when I get back to the house.
“…be a man and PM me.”
The oily fish Blues, Mackerel and such I bleed as soon as I decide to keep them other than that I’m with bangstick.
Fish bag with frozen water bottles. Trout die quickly, reds die a little slower than trout, flounder seem to take a while to die.
On ice the fish just slows way down until it dies. Humane enough for me. Bashing their heads in seems less dignified and could be messy. Same with stabbing them or some other form of physically killing the fish.
Just let them fall asleep in their icy beds.
iki jime - I release 99.9% of everything I catch, but if you know where the brain is, this is probably the best
Just don’t fillet or cut off the head or tail on the boat. Might be hard to tell Mr. DNR that it was a legal fish.
Sounds like I’ll just keep putting them in my knock off yeti, thanks for all the replies!

I fished with a dude that was worried about putting a live fish in the cooler. We had to head back to shore to get him stitches. Moving boat and trying to jab a wiggling fish in the Brain doesn’t mix.
If cobia fishing or other big fish we have used a “billy” stick to bomp em in the head. Or if taking a shark home I’ll cut and remove guts before putting in cooler. Other than that, like friogatto stated… Just let them fall asleep in their icy beds.
When I would keep fish I would whack them on the head. Better than listening to them thrash around in the cooler. I have a stainless lil bat .
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
Usually keep mine in the livewell and they are still alive at the dock. Drain the water and an icepick in the brain is quick and painless, at least the one I had was…
And, it’s OK to eat fish every once in a while. Not sure I agree with the folks that go out and catch the limit of fish and freeze them everytime they go out but, it is their choice and legal. I personally just keep two if I want supper and don’t freeze anything. Speaking inshore only.
Old Chicken Make Good Soup
I agree with the no freezing, I tried it once ant the meat lost its texture, I’ll put one on ice and continue to tag and release until the bite stops
Typically I would catch and release but will keep one on occassion
Real fishermen don’t eat frozen fish
Just let them fall asleep in their icy beds. That’s gold baby.
I usually pop a couple of 9mm rounds behind the pectoral fin but only for breeder reds from the grillage.
