I am thinking of purchasing a Key West 17 CC, does anyone here have one? Do you like the Boat? I would like to Kingfish in it. say from the jetties to 10-12 miles out, is this feasible? Does it have a fairly dry ride? Thanks for any input!
Not sure if this helps but I have a 22ft nautic Star, and I have to pick and choose my days. I have had an experienced fisher and boater tell me that just about any CC is not going to be a dry ride. I have been out several times on mine and I do get wet if the waves and wind are not in my favor. As far as size goes I am not sure. Hopefully some of the others can commit on that side. I have been reading this site for about 3 years and just got a log on, but there are other strings in here that include safety, size, and things needed. Hope this helps.
It will work for what you mentioned. My cousin use to have a 1740 and we would go out to 40-60’ on a good day. It could still go in the creeks and bays and was a good all-around boat. They loved it and I enjoyed my trips out on it as well. You do need to pick your days to go out. Out in 4’ tight swells you will get wet with spray and it is not as much fun but, still safe to make it back in. Handled 3-4 adults with a 90 Yami and not bad on gas.

I am selling my 1997 19 ft key west center console. Excellent shape. See the ad here on the forum. It can easily be used for what you are looking for. It has a 2010 115hp four stroke that has plenty of power and good fuel economy. Check out the ad and I have tons of photos as well I can email. Private message me.
I wouldn’t go out that far in mine…Jetties and 4 miles out is what I am comfortable with. Mines a 2002 with a Johnson 115hp saltwater edition. I have rode in the same model with a 90 HP. Takes forever to plane out. Get one with a 115. I get sprayed in the harbor with 2 foot chop. Good Luck. By the way are you looking for a used 1720?
Key West 1720 115 HP Johnson Saltwater.
Yes the boat is capable. I just sold my 1720 sportsman and it was a very dry, stable boat. Mine had a 115 on the back rather than a 90 as most have. It sat a little lower in the back but it really moved. I have used it to troll the shipping channel in the summer for kings and fishing/diving on the near shore reef. It is capable but its not ideal.
I have the same boat and take it out to the lowcountry anglers reef and the shipping channel, doesn’t really matter to me about the size of the motor as I’m usually not planning out getting there unless its really nice. I’m much more comfortable in the channel than at the lc anglers reef just due to the other boats around. We do get pretty wet and I always go with just one other person. I get wet enough so that you can visibly tell on my clothes which side the waves/wind is coming from.
We have hand held gps, and vhs radio. My biggest problem with the kingsfishing is the size and capability of the live well holding bait for a decent length of time, I usually end of with the freshest dead bait around.
I’ve been out to the end of the shipping channel trolling but only going buoy to buoy and zig zagging across. I’d rather either anchor at the jetties or just drift for kings/spanish a mile or two out of them.
I’ve also been extremely uncomfortable and nervous when the weather changes quickly. The 1720 sportsman is not a big boat in any kind swell especially with a few people on board.
I love the boat and have a great time fishing on it but realize that for right now it’s the biggest boat I can afford and will take the fishing much more seriously once I have some money for a bigger center console.
My 19 ft sportsman center console is for sale still. Ideal boat for what you are talking about. Just got the annual service done and checked out perfectly well. PM me for more details. Excellent boat.
